My truck is an '02 Mazda B3000 5 speed and it's been having clutch issues for years now. I replaced the clutch master cylinder a couple months ago and bleed the system free of air, which got it to pretty good working order. But lately the clutch hydraulics have been taking in air, causing the clutch issues to resurface. When I was bleeding the clutch I noticed the slave cylinder bleed screw was "loose" and "wobbly". I could push it around with my finger, moving maybe half an inch side to side. I was wondering if this behavior was normal or if this movement has to do with the clutch sucking in air?

By the way, the bleed screw was snugged up closed and I saw no brake fluid on the slave cylinder boot looking in through the transmission cutout. Any info you guys feel like sharing would be much appreciated!

is the slave cylinder leaking inside the trans bellhousing? There is no boot on the slave cylinder just a plastic throw out bearing

That bleeder valve is not supposed to move that much, they can wiggle side to side a bit but 1/2" sounds excessive.

FYI cheap slave cylinder have been known to fail within weeks here, not months not years but within weeks. USE OEM

here is a pic of your slave cylinder for comparison

Maybe time to drop trans and consider a new clutch!

Welcome !

Ranger clutches suck, period !

Even when you have a good shop do the work, at least what I thought was a good shop, you have to bring it back to get a "re-bleed" on the system.

Good Luck !

Could be especially at the Hourly Rate Shop get out here !

I'm not one to let them get away with anything, I took it back and had them redo it.

They said the fill and bleed from the bottom... with a machine that I suppose to remove any air... well it didn't work the first time, the second time it was a lot better, and I had them check it out the next time it went in for servicing.

Sorry about the late reply, I've been lazy! I just took another good look at the clutch slave and it definitely has a boot on it.

Much like the one seen here - http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/bx3/12596/image/6/

I also found that the wobble I was experiencing wasn't coming from the bleed screw. The wobble was coming from the silver line running into the cylinder. So I guess the bleed screw is actually fine and I just need to really PROPERLY bleed it? I can't imagine where else air would be leaking in from, and again the boot on the slave cylinder is dry.

What I really don't understand is how after bleeding the clutch it would shift fine for a few days and then start to shift rough again. Is it possible that the location of air in the system (either trapped in the lines or in the slave cylinder) is whats affecting my clutch engagement?
