I know there was a lot of talk on plenty of other boards with the recent releasing of the Cummins 2.8R Litre engine setup about possible diesel options, in this case fit for a Ford Ranger. I've actually spoken to Steven at Cummins about possibly moving a few of these units for a project source. Don't let the liters fool you.., here's an alternative in "all in one box" setups..
"If you haven't heard the news that Cummins has a brand-new 2.8L diesel crate engine on the market, you need to get your eyes and ears checked. The name Cummins has long been ubiquitous in the light-, medium-, and heavy-duty diesel market and for good reason. Cummins engines deliver durability, power, and efficiency.
In our world of off-roading 4x4s and tow rigs, engines like the 4BT, 6BT (AKA 12-valve 5.9L), 24-valve 5.9L, and 6.7L Cummins turbodiesels are second to none when it comes time to do work and make torque. And with this new Cummins crate engine available for $8,999, ready to run (literally, you can start it in the crate with a little fuel and a battery versus all the other   la carte crate engines out there), anyone with a pulse and a love for 4x4s has one on order, or wants to."

Love to get my hands on one.

My day job is at Columbus Motorsports, a division of Columbus Diesel. We do custom fuel systems and turbos for the tractor/truck pullers.

I have driven a 450HP 6BT ram that we turned down the fuel to get the 450 otherwise it was dangerous as a company truck. The torque was probably higher than the HP.

I work there and don't own a diesel LOL.

That's fricken awesome.. not much of a "Dodge" fan persay despite some very cool offerings but I do hold a higher regard for Cummins; especially when I seen them and Nissan partnering up for the Titan and I swear to God himself. If they release the new Frontier with that 3.9 Cummins diesel option. I can't say I will be wanting to wait in hopes that Ford "may" release the 2018 Ranger with their 5 cyl diesel option... I love my Ranger for all it is and has done but if forced to purchase newer vehicle... well.

I'm still considering the 4BTa.. Its heavier but i think its manageable and I can do an older one that's basically got 3 wires to the engine simplifying a lot, well somewhat but for about $2500-3000 less anyway.

Hell if anything the EMP freaked out people will love it..

Repower with the R2.8 Turbo Diesel Engine

The R2.8 Turbo Diesel is a powerful 2.8-liter 4-cylinder engine targeted as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to many older original gasoline and diesel engines used in iconic small pickups, SUV's, and 4x4's that are beyond their useful life*.  The combination of low end torque, low fuel consumption, low engine operating temperatures, modern high-pressure common rail fuel injection, and compact packaging makes the R2.8 Turbo Diesel the ideal engine to power your project wherever your adventure may take you. Our team of Enthusiasts have put together a package that provides you everything you need to start your engine with the exception of a battery, cooling package, and of course, diesel fuel to get your new Cummins running as quickly as possible. Below is what is included in your crate engine kit:
  • R2.8 Turbo Diesel engine assembly
  • Complete front-end accessory drive (Alternator, Power Steering Pump, Fan Hub, Serpentine Belt)
  • Cam-Driven Vacuum Pump
  • Remote Fuel Filter/Water Separator
  • Remote Oil Filter
  • Mass Airflow Sensor and Housing
  • Engine Wiring Harness and Engine Control Module
  • Starter
  • Flywheel
  • Universal Vehicle Wiring Harness (not including starter wiring)
  • Throttle Pedal
  • J1939 CAN Dash Display
  • Owner's Manual**
  • Installation Guide**
  • Cummins Quick Serve Online Access**
  • Emissions Testing Information

OK, so the time has passed for free shipping, missed it !
I have been trying to get Cummins to send the emission specs on the engine, for a while now, so I can attempt to get a CA Emission Approval for the R2.8L in a Ranger and in turn get the engine swap done but I still have not got Cummins to help me out !

The 9K$ price tag is a big one but compared to buying new 9K isn't so bad.

Any info out there other than from Cummins ?

This engine in a Ranger will be the best thing goin !

"The Cummins R2.8 Turbo Diesel (PN 5467036) has demonstrated through the testing procedures prescribed in 40 CFR Part 86 to meet EPA's Tier 0 (LDT 1 and 2) and Tier 1 emissions standards (LDT 2 weighing less than 4000 lb complete weight). This means that the R2.8 generally is suitable for Model Year 1999 or earlier light duty trucks. However, the suitability of the R2.8 engine to any vehicle is the responsibility of the installer and may depend on state or area laws.  Installation of this part in a vehicle for which it is not intended may violate U.S. and Canadian laws and regulations related to motor vehicle emissions.  Check your state and local emissions requirements before purchasing."

U.S. EPA

C.A.R.B.

If you were to get all NEW Ford parts, the cost would start out like this:
Block- $3200 +$650 Core
Head- $1300 X2 / [Re-mans $550-620 ea]

See how that's starting to add up? You'd get to $8000 pretty quick. $9k for a tq monster with a side benefit of MPG and a severly long term life of an engine isnt a bad deal but certainly not for the average DIY enthusiast.

12 Degree N,
I am all in, want to do the install but never got the info I needed for CA Certification.
I will be stopping by the Registry tomorrow and see what I need to get for information to certify the Ranger/R2.8L TDI.
Just wish there was a certified kit that could just be installed and get it done !

I want this to happen but I am not the one to chase this thing down, so many open projects; might take a while !

We understand, and for what its worth. Calif may "Require" you to still add a DEF Fluid system as well as pay all the fees for keeping it certed and maintained. Besides, you pay enough attention to whats going on in SoCal and Cali in general at the local town meetings, you see they're going to do everything "legislatively possible" to get you and everyone else out of their cars/trucks in the name of; increased walk-ability points, capped freeways into parks, gas taxes (already halfway in place),  25-47% increases in your registration fees (already in place mind you), among turning fwys like the 10 into toll roads. ANYTHING they can do to make the cost of driving unnecessary or astronomically financially impossible.. all in the name of "Climate change" The Utopian struggle is real.

I wish I had more information to offer at this time and with my inside guy being busy at Cummins, its been hard matching schedules and conversations beyond the written course of things. I'll see what more I can get on the subject as I can.

Dusten,
I've watched them, liked them, and asked a lot of questions, but got no answers that I could put together for a CA Diesel based Ranger.
I am all for the new R2.8L, it sound like it will be a great engine but as 12 Degrees has stated there may be more to CA-Diesels than meets the eye.

I have asked Cummins about my particulate swap, about the state I am in, both physical and metal, and is the Crate Motor Package all I need; no answers from them, just it will be available when and for how much !

I need to find a supplier of the Crate Motors and talk to them, get some paperwork on the package and then go for the CA DMV Vehicle Modification Approval, I think it is my only way out !

I've talked to Advanced Adapters, hoping they will be selling the package but they appear to know some of what is happening but not about where CA lies in the mess !

So I am back to square one, find out if the Cummins Crate Engine is approved for CA use when installed in a 4300 lb. vehicle, i.e. Ford Ranger Short Bed Std Cab.

Then the choice of transmissions comes in, will an NV4500, which I have, work with this engine, yes it will turn and drive the vehicle but is the gear ratio workable for both off road and Hy-Ways ? My T/C, an Atlas II, 4.3, will work but as everything else I need help to get this thing rolling !

I talked to a Shop here in SoCal and they are interested in the work but no idea about if it will be approved in CA. They also wanted me to swap a Chebby LS in my Ford... NOT HAPPENING ! I have a 5.0L that could go in and appears easier to make happen than the Diesel. I am not giving up yet, hoping something drops from the sky and has all the answers ! LoL !

@Scrambler - So I am quoting myself in slight correction.

I talked with my Cummins Contact(s) as I had to get half an answer from two different people on the matter.

Apparently, the Cummins R2.8L was and is meant for 99' and previous vehicles as a direct swap for those emissions based vehicles at that time or earlier as being compliant; However, Cummins R2.8 is NOT for use or sale/service in Texas or South Carolina as stated in the small print on their man site/brochure.

AND..

The engine is meant exclusively for Offroad purposes only, such as ORV or NON-registered cars for NON-HWY use.

With that being said, if your goal is to be CA Compliant. Unless you plan on keeping the Ranger as an ORV only, you will probably be hassled at some point and depending on what area of California you live in, some authorities may be more laxed or highly and overly excited to slap you around with a fresh citation booklet; page by page.

Which leaves you with a question to ask yourself, where do you wanna take your dispute; Local and State governments or the vehicle itself?

California obviously does not want to play nice at any level. Wish I had better news to report back after adding to the adrenaline surge of a possible solution.

James / Christian / Adrienne / Brendon / Sean,

Hey, thanks for taking the time to find information, which is good info for all  !

I didn't hear about it being just for Off-Road use, I did understand the year thing but hoped there was a way around it.

Now IF Cummins can come up with an On-Road Crate Engine for swapping it would be great.

I guess the 5.0L will end up in the Ranger and find a place to get the inspections done.

Again, thanks for taking the time to find out about this package deal and how it applies to everyday vehicles.

Back to the Drawing board, I guess I can spend the money on a new suspension or a six speed automation trans.

I too was aware of the year thing but until I talked to someone who actually defines the small print language, I was unaware of ORV only aspect.

Sorry it wasn't a better answer, or at least one even I wanted to hear myself. I would have to imagine that you and a few others aren't the only ones that have just had some wind taken out of their sails with that information, very discouraging if not disappointing.

Its bad enough that California isn't a better environment across the board in all things municipal to its inhabitants.. seems albeit a bit unfair in some ways.

Funny that you can't take any engine and either swap or modify it, as long as you meet the emissions of the year of the vehicle. That way putting no additional emissions, above your year vehicle in the air.
As long as you pass your inspection I would think you would be doing your part.

As I have said before THANKS for all the effort you put in this thread and the site and this problem I and maybe other, are having.

The "ORV Clause" was not even a thought, nor did I even see anything on it so I appreciate the info. Actually I thought the effort fro Cummins was focused on On Hyway Vehicles.

Talk Later, thanks for ALL the info you sent !

In GA if you swap out the stock engine and install any other engine that was not available for your year and model of vehicle you are now exempt from emissions testing. Also if it is over 25 years old you are exempt from testing.

Initially there were lots of rednecks stuffing big block engines in trucks that came from the factory with a max engine size of 351 or 350. I had a buddy that put a Isuzu diesel out of a totaled box truck in a mid 90's Bronco that had an engine that had a short life. His main objective was to avoid the hassle of the yearly inspection but it had more power and got better fuel mileage.

In MA I believe the year of engine needs to be the same or newer than the vehicle it is going in but out here in SOCal, I am lost.
I still say the same thing, if the truck meets it own year's emissions, why would there be a problem !
