 I was cleaning the valve covers in preparation to paint, and noticed cracking around two of the bolt holes:


Is this something I should be concerned about?

 Classic over tightening. First thing most people do when they see a leak from their valve covers is give the screws another turn. Tigging is a good idea but most humans don't have one in their garage. Next step would be go to a local salvage yard and yank a set BUT some people don't have a salvage yard close. I bet E-bay has them, do you do e-bay?

 Are those even metal/alloy? They look like TMC or some form of polystyrene plastic of sorts. And as Jamman noted the classic over tightening, those bolts are meant to be tq'd at 89 in-lbs. or 7-8 ft lbs if that's easier

Were they leaking ?

R U planning to get another pair ?
If you do, take a grinder to the outer edges, clean up the casting marks, no sharp EDGES !

 No, the engine spun some bearings. I was concerned about reusing the originals with the cracks for fear of a leak on the new block.
A new pair is ~$150 from Ford. A small price to pay for piece of mind later on.

I understand, I will be buying a new trans instead of trying to use a JY Unit, just to get it right the first time !

Clean up the Valve Covers before install, grind down the casting marks, smooth out any roughness.

What about a little Hydro-Graphics... would look good.
