It says manually adjust the short of the vehicle transfer once only?

The things made in India, its a Dorman product ( I though that stood for quality ? )

Maybe Im not understanding indian?

 I went out there and compared the new shift motor position with the transfer case as it sits ( and its sitting on 2WD ) and of course the 2 dont match up.

Not even close. Im sure Dorman will be off for a long much deserved weekemd.

I went on Dormans website, downloaded the directions for the motor and of course they are usless, not even specific to my vehicle. No mention of how they expect to get anything aligned

 Overall, it just means make sure you have the two items in their neutral positions before you apply power (via connector & harness), accidentally activate it, and the motor twists some internals backwards causing damage.

Ideally it's possible your transfer case is NOT in 2WD mode and you may need to verify that with the wheels off the ground and manually turning that shaft on the transfer case. Other issue may be misunderstanding of which model transfer case is being used, miss boxed item, proper orientation, etc..

I would rather rebuild a stock unit

Now with that said

If your t case is in 2wd and the new shift motor is in N or something, plug the shift motor into the truck and turn the dash switch to 2wd, does the shift motor move?

The shift motor should "shift" even when detached from the truck

These motors cannot be rebuilt ( at home at least ) Here is the thread I had going on over at Ranger Station about this whole shift motor deal. https://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178693&page=10

They kept telling me to rebuild my old one, telling me how easy it was, I eventually go around to taking my motor apart ( which BTW was prob perfectly fine ) and I ended up seeing myself that it could not be rebuilt, a couple of really knowledgeable people over there, things got real quiet at that point, then it was suggested that I just replace it.

 These things are relatively cheap, rebuilding should never be an option with an electric motor driven device unless you are sure the mechanical portion is the only problem. Mechanical binding can get wires hot in a motor burning insulation and causing shorts. The wire used for the stator windings is bare copper coated with a thin coat of lacquer (or it was back in the 70's. Probably some eco safe non volitile vegetable based liquid now that attracts insects and groundhogs) this stuff gets hot and melts causing shorts.

Every link you posted didn't seem to be for your year, it isn't in your sig but don't you have a 1998 truck?

And do not trust e-bay compatibility charts 100%! Have seen them often wrong found that out on motor mounts.

 I'm curious why you say every link I posted wasn't for my year? That is my motor?

What are you seeing when you open the links?

Anyway 4wd is working flawlessly every time, I put my camper at the top of the hill yesterday and there was zero issue.

Little ranger pulled it the 130 miles without issue. I just need to keep it at about 55 cause otherwise it can start swaying and get out of control quick.

I'll try and post a pic, not sure I can do that on McDonald's wifi.
