So back in the day (college) I had a 94 4.0 ext cab 4x4 and the truck was just an animal, some gears, welded diffs, 33x14 boggers , went a lot of places bigger trucks couldn't. I ended up getting out of that, into building fast cars, then jeeps, now I'm building this monstrosity.

So I got to drinking beer with my dear buddy Anderson ( He owned the aforementioned ranger before me) and we both missed that 94 & were going to build another trail/mud truck this year, so to hell with it.

We got on marketplace, found a 93 2wd 4cyl for $75, said it jumped time. Pics were taken at night, we could tell the box looked like it had been rolled and misc dents, grill broken, some rust. But figured who cares, it's a mud truck, supposed to go anywhere, didn't have to look pretty doing it, we just wanted an early 2nd gen like we had before. It'll end up getting glass bedsides & a bunch of other junk anyways, so who cares what it looks like.

After having a few more beers we hopped in the powerstroke, hooked up the flatbed & went to middle of meth capital Michigan and picked up the biggest POS ever.
Fawkin Mint.

And it starts. I'll upload some pics tomorrow, but for now the beers cold & I'm thirsty.

Out beating the dirty dick off my rubicon now, going to look at a set of one tons for the ranger ,the 351W is on the stand waiting on new bearings to come in, have a c6 & np208, it should be a good time. Have some 37 Baja claws that will have to get me through until I find some 40+” cleats for it. It's gonna be ugly as piss, get it together and beat it down, figure out what we want to change, find a cleaner body & frame and transfer everything over & make the improvements we decide we need in the meantime. Should be a beer fueled great time!

This is my formal apology post for not getting pics up today like I planned, ranger looks like a snow bank. Plus we decided we were gonna stay up until 9am drinking cheap beer and potato water, so yeah, what I did get accomplished was a new turbo on a VW tdi, and plowing/shoveling, and nothing ranger oriented :whatever:

Yeah, we barely had enough to fire up the sled, so nothing like the fun you're getting out there! It's been snow like heck then the next day it's 40s, haven't been able to do any ice fishing, almost never snow on the ground overnight, which makes nighttime yote hunting difficult. I'm jealous!

Keep it for a while, we fired back up the "Ranger of the Month" contests this year, one of the contests featured those kinds of Rangers. Has to be on the road though :)

Here's the 351W slightly disassembled, just going through a check-up after being in the 86F250 for last years bog season. It's going to get all new bearings, cylinders honed, and rings. This was spurred by the carb getting stuck wide open (Damn Holley) and dumping about a few extra quarts into the oil pan. Luckily it got shut down before too much more beating, so nothing really got trashed.

It is my first time breaking into this engine, I was told it was a complete virgin with 120K on it. Inspection reveals the pistons are .040” over. I believe this was typical for a ford reman, someone may be more knowledgeable on this than I am.

I am considering doing a cam, but haven't decided what to go with, anyone has recommendations I'm open to it, I'm definitely more of a sbc guy than ford guy, despite what my yard full of fords says lol

And I'll probably be doing some sweet pie cut Tig'd up stainless headers for it.

Wish we had some snow to ride the damn thing, lol
its only been out for two rips this year. First one the belt shredded after like 8 years and took out a bunch of the wiring, so fixed that and had to take the big boy track off (Idaho sled for a long time, where they actually get snow lol) and it's got a 1.5” studded lil guy on there now. It's had a bunch of crap done to the engine over the years, can't even remember half of it. But it RIPS lol
Yours is gorgeous, definitely jelly!

Contact ISKY Cams or any other reputable manufacturer and tell what you want to do, desired HP/Tq, and any other details. They will recommend what will work.

Thanks for the response!
Ill give the pros a call and see what they say. I was considering doing the Edelbrock cam& top end kit, some higher flowing heads would definitely help, but for now I'll probably just do the cam during the refresh and save some of the cash for the rest of the financial hits I will take over the next couple months to get this thing ready for spring, then revisit the engine once we're together and rocking.
Thanks again for the response, I'd actually never heard of ISKY before so I'll reach out to them!

Also, I'm looking for inspiration and whatnot for building a tube chassis/backhalf-front half, if anyone can link me to sweet build threads, even if not on this forum, I'm pretty sure the factory ranger frame will not live up to the mini-mega truck lifestyle

Giant motorsports makes some nice Ranger stuff, link kits and bed cages...makes for good inspiration if nothing else

Autofab, Camburg, I mean its a Ranger if it can be done it has been.......what are you trying to do with this thing? Mud bogs? high speed forest roads? weekend warrior?

Up here in North Idaho it seems everything is just for mud and snow and after living here for 2+ years I can see why!!!! The mud is NASTY

On the engine, if you are planning to hit high RPMs consider adding a windage tray in the oil pan. It's an old trick to get a few more ponies by reducing foaming. It is only advantageous near red-line. It is not necessary if you are building a torque monster for low end use.

You're on point! it's getting a pan with baffles and a windage tray. I'm not worried about squeezing out every pony, but I'll be adding baffles as well, for when we are bouncing around & hill climbing. I was intending on going to a 7qt or larger pan also, to accompany a high volume pump. but I will see where all my steering & links end up & how much room I have to work with. May have to just weld something up myself, idk!

I have built a couple of 351 Windsors. Besides the windage tray shifting to a high output 302 cam were the best upgrades - maybe the Weiand intake and 4-barrel carb also. All of my experience was 30+ years ago.

Never heard of Giant, so I'm going to check them out!
I did get to digging up a few builds on other forums just for inspiration. I didn't know if there was any on here/members that built stuff on here.

Its it's definitely gonna see a few local mud bogs, few local trails/forest road & state park trails. Seeing as that's all there's is here in Michigan, besides sand dunes, but I really don't dig that scene at all.
It won't see street at all, I have many other POS' for the street.

I must confess, I have thought about just shortening my 86 F250 frame and dropping it on, that would be so much easier lol

It's currently got a 4 barrel Holley, although I'm really not a fan of it, seems to constantly be giving fits. May tryo to track down a predator or just say hell with it and get a fast efi carb.
I know cam and heads would wake this thing up more than anything besides a little Schneef of the good stuff, but unless I find a set of heads for scrap prices, they're on the back burner. If a 302 Ho factory cam wakes it up, I might be down with that though
