OK so I found one on CL that had just posted. He put 750 in new tires on it and the clutch went out.

Selling for 750.

Little one, 4 Cyl. I'll post pics when I get there I'm on my way. Kinda bought it to sell.

Nope.

I think it isn't the clutch, seemed just fine to me. Might be in the hydraulics I'll read about it never put a slave cyl. in in my life. Now I have to get it home somehow lol.

Said it hadn't been started in 3 months...  it fired right up. Paint is decent needs a bath. Not smoked in, already has shackles, 1 year old shocks, the tires have 200 miles on them, he replaced the starter last year.

Dang man that's a steal. Super cool color too, fairly low miles....nice!

High miles but he really took care of it. Never been smoked in, oil changes with synthetic, the driver seat isn't even ripped AND that console lid still works.

I wouldn't consider 180k on a Ranger particularly high miles, but idk maybe I've just fallen too in love with mine!

I think the plan for this one is.... I think I'll get like a $75 set of wheels and tires, cheap headlight lenses from e-bay, serious bath and a polish, set of floor mats, fix whatever is wrong with the slave cylinder and sell it for a grand. That way I will recover my total investment and have a fresh set of tires for the next project that might need them.

Bumper mounts (rear) underneath are about 50% gone or I would use it as transportation while I work on the rest of the herd. Rest of the frame looks good.

I will drive it for a few months as per tradition to see if anything else strange happens that would be dangerous to a purchaser.

Off to read about this elusive dreaded clutch system.

What was wrong with a pedal and a cable? You only had the cable and throw-out bearing to worry about. Now you have a pedal, hydraulic cylinder, lines, slave cylinder, and a throw-out bearing. What did we gain, simply that a wimpy person can still press the clutch? AND you loose that "feel" where you know the exact position and condition of the pressure plate just by your left leg.

What a score!!! I love the color, so do V8 guys.
I cannot tell you how many times we see trucks with brand new tires on CL for some mechanical failure. It is almost as if new tires = end of life for old truck

180K is low miles for the year
Dont get me started on the internal slave cylinder setup...thy could have easily put the hydraulic slave outside the trans just like the full size trucks.....but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO they had to mess with it
However you gotta give Ford/Mazda kudos as the stock clutch setup usually lasts 180-220K miles...not bad. Its when the aftermarket parts and isntallers get in there the trouble starts
Besides dropping the 5 speed in a 4 banger Ranger? Pfffft what are you gonna do with the rest of your morning?
NICE TRUCK IM JEALOUS!!!!!!!! :)

I think you can sell it for more like $1800-2000 when fixed with those tires

Thanks, when I see really good deals something triggers and I have to get them. I need to drive it to see what is really wrong, we fired it up, I pressed the clutch in, put it in gear, let out a little and it felt perfectly normal. It will go on a dolly under its own power and the first thing it is doing is taking a trip around the block. I get the impression I might have to drive it longer to see what is really wrong.

I heard some valve rattle when it first started but it had been sitting for 3 months. If I remember, that red one I had with similar mileage and same engine rattled when I first started it too after replacing the belt. After first warm up driving it daily it did not rattle even when started.

Runs extremely smooth. This guy did not beat on it... but he was a "fast" driver I could tell by the grill. He wasn't a "burn outs" or "Jack rabbit launches" type guy but I bet it saw 75/80 regularly.

I wish I didn't have to rent a dolly for this one and could just drive it home I bet it would make it. You only need a clutch for first gear anyway :-)

yes copper....they make the best v8 trucks
I love that burnt orange, basketball orange, metallic copper...whatever they call it Rangers look good with that color combo
Drive that SOB home!! Bring a strap....that's how we roll.
Heck my stepson will drive anything home! I have seen him drive trucks I would only trailer, like ones with no windshield due to a rollover, or ones where the passenger door is now where the seat used to be.... If you drive it at least you will identify the good and the bad!
Good score! cold start rattle = possibly needs timing belt?

Jamie the burnt orange you are talking about is called bright amber metallic, it is almost orange. My wife had a 99 Explorer Sport in that color. See the Explorer Sport in the link, it was the same color.

Reserved tow dolly, I'll be picking up my 1992 Geo Metro Convertible Monday morning.

I wish I had a place to store a tow dolly I would buy one. I saw one with a winch and surge brakes for 650 the other day and passed.

650!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So much want
You can keep it here :) Attached to my tow truck I promise to only use it alot

I have upgraded my "car hauler" 4 times over the last 10 years. Started with a wood deck 18' car trailer I paid $800 for.... all wood was rotted so I rebuilt it, the whole trailer. Sold it so I could get a 20' car trailer for $1200....This one fit two rzr's, also needed new wood and rebuilding, so I did. Then I sold that one because I found a 24' deck over that can hold two rzrs on snow tracks that had been in an accident and was slightly bent I still have this trailer I love it...now I did not need the 20' with side rails. The side rails make it hard to work on trucks on the trailer...so away went the 20's trailer and I got a 18' with a dove tail...again wooden deck needed fixing, axles, springs brakes, tires, etc...so I rebuilt that one too. After switching trailers so often (like every 2 seasons) I gave up trying to put the winch on the front f the trailer and instead mounted it on the back of my flatbed...no matter what trailer I was using I always had a 5000# winch ready to go under my flatbed...I love that setup! FYI a 5000# badlands winch WILL PULL a Ranger with 3 flat tires that is dragging frame ifrom being wrecked) onto a trailer and I do mean DRAG. It will also pull a 4 door explorer onto a trailer that is stuck in gear and on a incline, I could not believe it....no problem pulled it right on without the rear tires rolling and we were pointed up a steep steep hill!
FINALLY some dude posted a all metal 18' car hauler with new brakes and tires on CL for $800.... I watched the add, thought it was too good to be true. Two weeks later it was still posted? WTF? So I went down there, sure enough, new tires, new brakes, all metal deck, only asking $800?? Must have been because it was blue? Nobody else snagged it up so I did. Best trailer I ever had for hauling rangers and explorers...with the metal deck it makes it easy to roll a jack around, use jack stands and pull the rear axle. It also has surge brakes so no need to have the electric brake controller working all the time........So this one I installed a 6000# harbor freight winch, wireless controller all inside a metal tool box on the tongue with battery setup that charges from the tow vehicle.... I am keeping this trailer forever....

My point? So many times we wish we had a simple tow dolly, they are so handy! No messing with trailers all the time and when a truck is already on the flatbed you can grab the dolly and go get another ranger. $650 is a really good price for a nice one with brakes.......just be careful some of these explorers cannot be towed far with the rear tires on the ground without removing the rear d shaft.

Wish I would have taken a pic of the frog I found when I opened the drivers door. He did not want to leave.
"Pumpkin" is home now, I drove it off the dolly (forgot to pull the ramps so it was a drop) and immediately drove it around the block.
I guess as long as you keep the reservoir full it works fine, the slave has a slow leak. I let it get to temperature, this thing runs awesome. I'm going to soak the body with water to loosen all the crap that is on it then drive it through the car wash later today.
Got 2 people wanting to buy it already, but I don't know... it rides nice with 4 new shocks and new tires. It had ball joints and tie rod ends at 118,000. Fuel mileage should be decent with a 2.5 and a 3.73 rear gear. Steers like a sports car.
I don't know, if this thing wasn't rotted around the bumper mounts on the frame I'd keep it. I'm uploading a vid as I type and will link it in a few.

All tied up and ready for travel

One of the cleanest Geo Metros I have ever hauled with a Ranger and a U-haul dolly.

Anyone know what this is? I've owned 2 other 2.5 Rangers and have never seen this. It is like a funnel that directs the air from the grill to the radiator.

Is this an option, is it stock, was it missing on every other Ranger I have owned OR is it aftermarket?

Jim I think the funnel thing you mentioned is stock, but I do not know what it is included with. My current 00 Ranger 4x4 does not have it.

pretty sure that was 98-99 ranger only and it is stock
Whats a little frame rot around the bumper? Nothing that can't be fixed!
I like this little truck, I would put a v8 in it :)

Fix the slave & bumper mounts, leave the engine and give it to your kid to drive.

I actually really like to drive the 4 banger rangers, I find them to be plenty zippy!! The 2.3 and 2.5 are big 4 cylinder and make good torque for a little truck... I can slam through the gears in a 4 cyl and they drive like go carts. It is a good truck for a kid, no room for friends and no nitrous!!

I absolutely love my truck. The Duratec 2.3 is amazing to me. If I pull out into traffic I can stay in 1st until about 25-30 and then I'll be in second hitting 60 before you shift into 3rd. It sounds amazing, it's reliable, and it's plenty fast, just not fast enough to really get you into too much trouble.
