Couldn't find a section to put this in, after looking for years I found a guy with a tow dolly he isn't using and I can buy it for below market value.

Now I'm wondering do these things need to be licensed? I asked him if he had a title and he looked at me like I was stupid, says he's been pulling cars with it for 10 years. His wife said she towed a car all the way from Texas to here with no issues.

Still didn't answer my question though because I don't want to buy something that needs licensed and not be able to plate it because of no docs. Getting a title for a lost or abandoned vehicle is next to impossible in ohio unless you have an auto dealers license. 9 step process which will cost you 200 bucks at least and take months.

Anyone know? Tried google, no definitive results.

Uhaul has to plate them because they can go in any state.

Dustin your article makes sense but it seems like half the people have no idea, I found articles that say yes and articles that say no.

I think I'll buy the thing, looks like most of the articles say the car being towed needs to be licensed which might be an issue in some cases especially the things I tow LOL.

It is kinda ugly but heavier than a normal uhaul dolly and has the kingpin for swivel or no swivel. If the lights don't work I will fix that. I think it was home made by some welding guru by the looks I have never seen one.

I'll pull it down off his storage trailer tuesday with a fork lift and look it over... will take pics thanks.

If it is a home built unit there are different rules that apply and it varies state by state. Is there a serial number on it?

I'll know a lot more tuesday. This all started with me looking atop a storage container and saying.. "is that a car dolly".

Found out yes and it was for sale. All I know so far.

Federal DOT laws state that you can tow any unregistered vehicle by truck or trailer as long as vehicle being towed is properly secured and able to be towed and marked as VEHICLE IN TOW. Towed vehicles do not have to plates. Upon looking this up in my DOT law book I also found that towing with a chain is legal on 2 lane roads providing chain is strong enough hooks have clasps on them and the chain is inside a pipe with a safe distance between both vehicles.  I find this funny since I just recently received a ticket for an unsecured load for not having my four wheeler strapped inside the bed of my truck.

That's not an article.  That's from Ohio's state website

I will have to research the definition of article, I didn't mean to downsize the impact of what you posted :)
