Nabbed a free self propelled lawn mower from work. Troy Bilt, Briggs, was used once practically brand new. We decided to outsource the lawn work.

Well it wouldn't start. No spark. One part only, the ignition coil/electronic module thingie. Like a 15 dollar part right?

This particular one I CANNOT find a crossover for, the exact briggs part number is 593381.

The lawn mower is junk without it. This should be easy and even if I could find something that takes the same diameter flywheel it would probably work. Anyone have a 593381 laying around? LOL

I bought a 593872 , looks identical, came on a MTD that looks exactly like my TroyBilt. Same briggs OHV motor.

Let's see if it works.

I would hit the local Ace Hardware small engine department and have the model and serial number of the engine. They would need to order it as ignition modules get superseded yearly and the parts counter do not keep anything like this in stock.

I replaced the ignition on a 35 year old Briggs 6 HP two years ago and it was just under $50. The block cracked a few months back and I replaced it with a 7 HP Ironton from Northern Tool for $99. I junked the old engine.

Thanks guys, what blows is this thing died within the first year and there was a 2 year warranty, they could have just got another mower. Of course the thing is over 4 years old now.

The one I found is used but that number is a more common one.... if the used one works I'll order a new one just to have a spare. Having a spare means the original one will never die because money MUST BE WASTED! My luck.

I got a free mower when my folks moved into assisted living last year. Brand new John Deere. Then scored a grass catcher kit for $75.

Did you think it would grow a spark in a years time? Probably needs a carb now also.

I replaced the coil and used it all last year. After cleaning the carb LOL. It died again this year. Must be a weak assembly it isn't just a coil it is a little electronic magneto since they have eliminated points.

I was just messing with you about the coil.

The Briggs coil assembly is the weak link on their engines. I replaced a 25+ year old Briggs that started acting up 3 years ago with coil problems. I replaced the $35 coil two years running and when it crapped the third time where I got a $99 IronTron at Harbor freight for $79 out the door with coupons on a $89 sale price.  It took less than an hour to swap the engines and it was a perfect fit. I did the same thing for the POS Honda engine that was on my pressure washer.

Wow I was at harbor freight today! Picked up a AC gauge set. Didn't see a motor.

We have a Harbor Freight right across the road from Northern Tool. Both are fairly new stores that doubled in size from the older stores they shut down in other parts of the county. They honor each other sales fliers and discount cards and regularly go head to head with local sales.

I have had some breaks on this project.
The code on the engine is actually a date code. The QR code above it is what gave me the clue.
Clicking on the QR code took me to the briggs and stratton site AND gave me the actual model number of my engine:
093J02-0006-F1
Which turns out there are 2 coils/magnetos for. One prior to date code 16012200 which is the 593872 I bought and lasted one year.
The other one on the briggs site is 595009 said to be used after date code 16012100 which I'm taking as December 21st of 2016.
So one is for use after date code December 21st of 16, one is for use before date code December 22nd of 2016
My date code is... EXACTLY 16 1220. So what I have is the 2000 ford ranger of lawn mowers, manufactured exactly on a cusp where they were changing parts.
The part number I bought this time was a 595009. I know it isn't the 593872 because it was a different coil altogether and I had to re rout the spark plug wire and lengthen the kill wire to get it to work. BUT it isn't the 553981 which was the number on the original coil/magneto I took off BUT doesn't seem to be an active part number in any of the briggs archives.
I bought it in a briggs package, it is brand new, stay tuned and we will see what actually comes in!
This mower is in 100% perfect brand new shape otherwise but if this part doesn't go right in and match the original routing of the spark plug wire and the kill switch wire... I'm selling it for 50 bucks so it goes in a day. My age old crafstman lawn mower is doing me just fine.

Guys this is my luck.

This lawn mower is intrinsically turd. I got the part, installed it. Didn't spark. ??? So I stuck another old spark plug in the boot and grounded it.... spark. The spark plug was brand new last year and was bad. I have no idea if the old coil was bad.

So I bought an appropriate spark plug, checked to see if it was sparking and it was, set the gap and installed it.

Nothing.

?

I dumped some gas straight in the carb hole same as I did when I first pulled it out this year and this time it started for 2 seconds. Progress.

Took the plastic POS over designed carb apart and blew out the orifice to the bowl AGAIN, put it together and it runs.

Anyone want a lawn mower?

I remember having one old briggs lawnmower probably my dads originally that we left outside... started right up for like 6 years.

AND it cost us $59 at Kmart.

Now they are $259 for a cheap one you have to repair every summer. What has this world come to.

Jim, it seems now everything is built as a throw away, use it one season & throw it away & buy a new one next year. Don't get me started on gas grilles. Gone are the days of rebuilding & repairing things to last longer then one season. I do however still keep repairing my 15 year old Yard Machines snow blower in hopes it lasts until we move farther south in a couple years.

Oooooh yeah buddy a yard machines snow blower
I love to modify snow throwers, there is a trick you can do to a snowthrower to make them really perform, I'm talking snow 30' in the air kind of perform
Wanna know how?

Harbor freight engines are awesome!!
I have re powered our yard machines log splitter with them twice now

We do lots of mowing back here. Toro mowers have been very good for me in the last 12 years or so I have used up two toro push mowers, the $300 ones. and I do mean USED up....
That is for the small stuff.

I use a DR Equipment tow behind mower on the atv that will handle 3" saplings to tow our 5+ acres.

Yes a helmet is a good idea unless you like concussions from sticks. No that is not me, my helmet is way cooler, but I do have that mower, a red ATV and I'm slightly over weight! LMFAO

I also have a PTO mower deck for the back of the tractor that works good where the atv cannot go. The Toro push mower does all the small stuff front and back yards. Grass grows insane here......I mowed last Saturday and its like I never did anything a week later.

Any new engine has emissions crap on it. Guess what is first to go away at my house? The emissions crap. why? Because these little engines cant run right with it installed! I have fixed quite a few machines now by removing the charcoal canister and non vented gas cap. Before the charcoal canister and sealed gas cap briggs and honda engines ran perfectly for us right? Not anymore. If you get one that wont stay running, try it. Try venting the gas cap slightly, I bet it starts to run........... I will vent the gas cap (drill or buy a vented one, or just unscrew it a little) and ditch the charcoal canister and the crazy EGR stuff they weld onto the ehxuast....ah finally small engines that run properly.
Here in Idaho we can get non ethenol at about every other fuel station....non ethenol is really good in any small engine that sits....like a lawn mower or snow thrower.....
