I looked for  a year before purchasing a used 09 Ranger this past December. I was willing to look for another year if necessary, however the right one came along without need of repairs, and no rust. Since buying it in December I have been keeping an eye out for a spare Ranger, however there has been absolutely nothing in local listings. Some older ones, but everything is either beat to heck, or not configured as a standard cab, 4 banger manual. Where are these things hiding? Or were there just very few of them produced?

More thoughts on this.. The trucks are out there but slowly going away one by one either through the junkyard system as many people over the last near decade now have been sourcing them for parts and also the Ranger has become the 90's Honda Civic of the Domestic world which is where you describe perfectly the abused and beaten down scrappings of what I may be incorrectly stating but, [I'm willing to wager money on it still though] youth of today who not only fail to appreciate what they have and or fail to implement proper maintenance unless somehow forced to whether that be lack of funds for another vehicle or a parent or guardian is willing to front the money for repairs. Or they've been taken out and wrecked in accidents to where few if anything of value is worth much it seems. Its not like many vehicles gracefully get towed to the JY and die. Usually a form of casualty in one way or another.

Same as that early and similar years of the 90's Honda's as I mentioned. Near every one of them, especially a hatchback but not limited to has been hacked into inside and out, beaten until its near only worth a $200-500 JY vehicle for scrap.

Your situation is a little different as you're looking for a whole and what I assume a second truck, not a project to invest time and money into short of a few things to solidify it being "personally yours" (?). I have some similar but yet different issues in the same realm of things with my 93'. I  need a 93-94' Std cab 4x4 frame and also want a 93/97' extra cab 4x4 as a second truck for an alternative purpose and to outfit with my Flip-Pac so i can remove the bed on my 93' std cab. I'm going for an Norweld aluminum UTE tray and matching canopy eventually.

There are plenty of Ranger's in the Atlanta market. Most are high mileage beaters but there are some cherry ones out there. Most are regular cab. But the 08-12 year models don't last long.

A local exterminating company had a fleet of white, long bed, regular cab, XL and XLT's that they run for 150-160k. When they hit the magic number they sell them for $4200 regardless of year model or engine/transmission combination. Right now there are 6 out there for sale, 4 of them are 2006 and 2 are 2007.

Plenty for sale in my area, but prices are going up for sure. I could easily sell mine for $1,000-1,500 more than what I paid for it almost two years ago.

yes the release of the new ranger has the prices for the older rangers going up! good news for us, unless you are buying LOL

I always have Rangers for sale, I am in Idaho and we have rangers in all price brackets in different stagees of their lives. Up here people still driving Rangers from the 80's which is great news! Nothing like a good ol Gen 1

Here in my town in Michigan it is thin pickings I have failed to remember that these things are getting old, but are still very relevant as pickups.
Fortunately I am very picky, but patient. The right one will come up someday. Hoping some sucker gets hooked on the new Ranger and sells his mint 2011 standard cab with 50k to me! lol

Down here in southeastern Ohio rangers are a dime a dozen. Any configuration any year 2 or 4 wheel drive in nearly any condition and price range. In recent years I have seen an increase in explorers explorer sports and sport tracs. The Mazda b-series is almost mythical in this area. As I work in a salvage yard our inventory on rangers comes and goes. We may get 10 in 3 months then go another 6 months before we see another one. But they still remain a popular truck in this area.

Its where you live, everything rusts.

Go to washington, lots of rust free trucks there.

Dusten is right, I lived in Mich most of my life. South of the 45th parallel unless you don't drive your car in the winter at all it will rust since sodium is the state mineral.

With very few exceptions north of the 45th you can get decent cars, when I lived there they were not using salt way north. They just plow a trail in the snow. A lot of sand. Things might have changed I haven't lived there in 15 years. Lots of older retired folk also that actually take care of their crap.

I have been DIY rustproofing the Ranger in an effort to thwart the inevitable. I am headed to Seattle in a couple of months and am currently talking with my wife about a fly and drive for me after we visit with my son. That is a long drive with a vehicle I don't know.
