https://ford-rangers.com/forum45/2176-1.html

You know half the nation thinks that these were put there to pop out if the anti-freeze gets too lean to somehow save the head/block from cracking.
They are actually part of the casting process for removing the sand after the iron is poured. They machine them while the head is on the mill and seal the holes with extreme press fit core plugs. The thinness of the core plugs is why they tend to rust quicker than the thick casting.

If this is of interest to anyone do a search on "cope and drag" it will explain the mold process. I designed a couple sand molds back in the day.

Interesting, I didn't know that was their purpose.
I have always called them freeze plugs for the purpose which you stated but I have an engine that popped two of them, the block cracked too, so they didn't help but it make sense now.

Yeah, I've heard them erroneously called "freeze plugs" my entire life.  No idea where that term got started, but they do NOTHING to protect from water freezing in the water jackets.  As Scrambler noted, they will push out, but the block/heads will be cracked as well.

I had a 351 Windsor that popped a chunk out of the block back in the early 80's. I found another one and built it better. Since then I haven't cheaped out with anti-freeze. It did have some anti-freeze in it good down to about 25 degrees but we had a weekend of single digit temps.

Took a few minutes this morning to setup a new Flip Key for the truck, as my old one was falling apart (cheap eBay unit).  I already had the mechanical cut done a couple of months ago, so all I had to do was put the battery in and add the chip to the truck and program the FOB.  For what it's worth, in order to use one of these Flip Keys, you have to pop the key guard off the ignition cylinder and cut the guard off, then sand and polish the plastic.  The Flip Key saves wear and tear on your pocket since the sharp key cuts aren't exposed when it is folded.  That way, it won't saw a hole in your pocket! :-)

My 2000 Ranger is officially off the road. I pulled the upper & lower intakes because it was leaking oil thinking the coolant was leaking from there also, but it was not. With the intake off I put coolant directly into the coolant passage & it is leaking between the engine & the trans. Right now I can not do an engine swap as I have been diagnosed with a pinched nerve in my lower spine causing hip & back pain. I will be starting PT on Monday & hopefully that helps reduce the discomfort & pain. Right now the Ranger sits next to our garage, if anyone needs/wants any parts from it all is available cheap. I found a 05 F150 2WD regular cab with only 80k miles for a very good price that I could not pass up.

Wow, Mike, that's a really nice F150!  So sorry to hear about your Ranger, though.  So, no possibility of you keeping it around until your back is better and then fixing the leak?

That's a bummer. This was a really cool Ranger. You put a lot of love into it.

As a former owner 1998, 2019 Fx4 and now the Tremor...  I was blessed to get my match, z plan and no dealer add ons... The steering and handling on the Tremor for exceeds the FX4 and worth the up grade.   Today gladly enjoyed chores of start- shop.  Now I am thinkink about a ceramic detail?

@Jimmy Angel: Does the Tremor trim level include a handling package?  As for ceramic coating, I have read both good and bad about it.  The expense of ceramic would be a total waste on my almost 20-year old truck.

Spent most of the weekend playing with my truck.  I installed a new FX4 textured front valance that I've had for two years.  I re-installed my Level II tow hooks after sandblasting the black part and repainting them.  With the new front valance being black, I removed the rear bumper step pad... cleaned, prepped and painted it satin black to match.  I installed my summer wheels & tires, checked and topped off all the fluids, then rolled it outside.  I gave the engine bay a good douche with Dawn dish detergent and a foam cannon, then the rest of the truck got a super good scrubbing, followed by a rub-down with Mequiar's Quik Detailer spray.  Truck looks presentable again.  Sad thing is: 80% chance of thunder storms tomorrow. :x

Anyway, here's a pic of the truck as it sits today...

BTW, while I was washing it, I noticed a crack in the windshield going full length top to bottom.  It has had a couple of rock chip stars for several years, and it was my intention to replace the windshield when one of those decided to split out.  Funny thing is, this crack didn't originate from either of the rock chips.  Guess I am buying a new windshield!

Thanks Mike!  Poor truck has been neglected the last couple of years due to my wifes medical issues.  Had too much going on... it was lucky to get a run through a car wash!  Things are easing up now, so I can play with her again! :-)

I don't have any place to mount the hooks I have for my 01 since it is a 2wd.
But today I bought a cluster off a guy that was parting out a 2000 expo. It had white gauges and a silver surround. I swapped the surround with a black one I have like 12 of and the thing looks sweet. I have a pile of Zevo 2825's but my plug to test them is in storage so I'll get it tomorrow and take a pic.

Been meaning to replace the cluster in Hiyo Silver for a while because the bulbs are about dead. While I'm in there might as well replace the entire cluster....

My Truck has had a white face cluster since about six months after I bought it.  Cameron had a silver face cluster in his truck, which we kept after he totaled it.  I have considered going with the silver, but it is for a 4x4.  I guess that wouldn't really be an issue.  We actually have a lot of parts we salvaged from his truck that I could put on mine.  Hmmm....

I ended a 7 year project yesterday, the 5.0 came out of the original green "Gherkin" ranger. I can't even type about it without getting upset. Thousands invested, dragged it to Reynoldsburg, dragged it to Lancaster, dragged it to Grove City, paid to store things that could be in my garage while it just sat there in my garage. I'll tow the carcass to a local scrap yard where I will get nothing.

Thanks Michael, I know you can relate.

The rust has started also, it had a spot on the cab corner when I bought it but manageable. Now the cab corner is missing, I took the bedliner off in hopes of selling the bed and there is no bed left front. Funny too the outside of the bed is spotless, one of the doors is good and both front fenders are great. The frame is good too, it was coated and the coating is peeling now but the rust is contained. I would strip it and paint/save the frame if I had a place to put it.

I wonder if Adam could use the frame, I'll text him and see if he has a need for it. I'd give it to anyone that had a use for it.

I would love to have the time/place/money to pull my truck off the frame, media blast everything, etch/prime/paint it and rebuild the suspension, then put the body and box back on.  If anything will kill my truck, it is the rust I can't seem to stop on the frame.

Did some work on the 83' by prepping to remove the engine and trans whole. Keeping this engine as it ran good, might stick it in our Geo with the 4 speed in the future. Did anyone know that the overflow from the radiator ran to the windshield washer fluid reservoir? Kinda weird to me. Wish I woulda had my phone to take a picture.
