Well, after some shopping and lunch with the wife, I decided to install my new thermostat and gasket and fill my cooling system with fresh Prestone coolant.  AGAIN.  What, you say?  Didn't you just do that when you changed your heater core?  Yep, sure did!

I purchased a Motorad "fail-safe" thermostat from RockAuto along with a FelPro gasket and picked up 2 gallons of Prestone All Vehicle Concentrate for the heater core project.  At that time, I installed a flush tee to help burp the system of air when refilling.  That worked beautifully.  Unfortunately, the plastic cap on the flush tee cracked on the way home from work the very next day and allowed all my new coolant to spray all over the engine compartment, causing the fail-safe thermostat to lock in the full open position.  This is a one-and-done situation; meaning once the thermostat locks open, you throw it away and install a new one.  So, I went to Menards and bought a BRASS cap for the flush tee (problem solved there), filled the truck up with water and determined that I hadn't blown a head gasket or something.  RockAuto sent the new thermostat and gasket (second purchase) in record time so I installed it today.  Once again, I have exceptional heat and a cooling system that works as it should.  I've got to say, I really am impressed with the Motorad "fail-safe" thermostat.  I fully believe this feature saved me from toasting a head gasket or worse.  Does it suck to have to replace it again in only a week?  Yeah, pretty much.  But that $7.00 thermostat saved my engine and so I go on record recommending the Motorad #7244-192 fail-safe thermostat for your engine.

Yeah, pretty much!  Kind of like that song they would sing on Hee Haw back in the late 60's ~ early 70's: Gloom, despair and agony on me...  LMAO

Actually, this was yesterday:  Installed my winter wheels, washed my red powder-coated brake calipers and gave the truck a much needed hand washing.  Then I scrubbed my American Racing wheels and tires, prepping them for winter storage.  I usually do this around the middle of October, but things kept getting in the way.  Luckily, we've had an exceptionally mild winter thus far, so my custom wheels didn't see any snow, salt or sand.

Also, my son and I got the garage cleaned up last week and the trash service hauled all the junk away.  He is now storing his ATV on his side of the garage since his Chevy Avalanche won't fit.  This will keep that pricey new ATV out of the weather and less likely to be stolen.

I MAY do other things to the truck over the next couple of days, or I might just kick back and rest a bit...

Needed to pick up some 2x4's, railing balusters, rebar, & a handrail for some of my projects when I am on vacation in 1 week, so the Ranger got to be used as a "work truck".

Started setting up the side marker lights on the Grille Shell, similar to the side markers on the Raptor except these will be mounting in the sodes of the grileel Shell under the headlight line.

I JB Welded a thick fiber washer to some 1/2" PVC Pipe.
Now I am trying to contour the Pipe to fit the Grille Contour, I drew some lines now determining just how to cut a curved line in the pipe.

Any ideas excepted !

An aftermarket auto dimming mirror is up next on the list, after that... moving the Radio outward, painting some Heater Vent Louvers to replace the black ones in the Radio Bezel.

Did the first level of fiberglass; need to trim the edges once the resin sets and then another coat of resin.
Here is a pic of the one of the pods in place before fiberglass.

@Mike: Didn't you replace the radiator in that truck already?  Hopefully, it's just a hose or loose clamp.

I replaced the radiator & the water pump. It is leaking further back, dripping off the starter & the front of the trans bellhousing.

That doesn't sound good.  That has a 4.0, which I'm not familiar with.  Good luck finding the problem!

I'm familiar with his 4.0. I'm also familiar enough with him to know the minute the temperature gets to 40 again he will spend a half hour with it and figure it out!

I am keeping my fingers crossed that is not a big problem.

Thanks Jim, it snowed a little last night so no work until it melts. Later this week it is supposed to get a little warmer around 50° & I am going to get back at it. Where it is dripping from I am thinking it is the rear intake manifold gasket.

I had a 2.9 a while back, had a leak at the rear of the engine... it was a head freeze plug that had rusted out !

Luckily I had an extended warranty and got it repaired by for for nothing... via a Law Suit, but that another story.

Not sure if the 4.0L you have even has a rear freeze plugs in the heads but something to think on !

This is a 4.0 identical to Mikes, the first page shows several "freeze plugs"

https://ford-rangers.com/forum45/2176-1.html

You know half the nation thinks that these were put there to pop out if the anti-freeze gets too lean to somehow save the head/block from cracking.
They are actually part of the casting process for removing the sand after the iron is poured. They machine them while the head is on the mill and seal the holes with extreme press fit core plugs. The thinness of the core plugs is why they tend to rust quicker than the thick casting.

If this is of interest to anyone do a search on "cope and drag" it will explain the mold process. I designed a couple sand molds back in the day.
