Well, after some shopping and lunch with the wife, I decided to install my new thermostat and gasket and fill my cooling system with fresh Prestone coolant.  AGAIN.  What, you say?  Didn't you just do that when you changed your heater core?  Yep, sure did!

I purchased a Motorad "fail-safe" thermostat from RockAuto along with a FelPro gasket and picked up 2 gallons of Prestone All Vehicle Concentrate for the heater core project.  At that time, I installed a flush tee to help burp the system of air when refilling.  That worked beautifully.  Unfortunately, the plastic cap on the flush tee cracked on the way home from work the very next day and allowed all my new coolant to spray all over the engine compartment, causing the fail-safe thermostat to lock in the full open position.  This is a one-and-done situation; meaning once the thermostat locks open, you throw it away and install a new one.  So, I went to Menards and bought a BRASS cap for the flush tee (problem solved there), filled the truck up with water and determined that I hadn't blown a head gasket or something.  RockAuto sent the new thermostat and gasket (second purchase) in record time so I installed it today.  Once again, I have exceptional heat and a cooling system that works as it should.  I've got to say, I really am impressed with the Motorad "fail-safe" thermostat.  I fully believe this feature saved me from toasting a head gasket or worse.  Does it suck to have to replace it again in only a week?  Yeah, pretty much.  But that $7.00 thermostat saved my engine and so I go on record recommending the Motorad #7244-192 fail-safe thermostat for your engine.
