 I have come to adore the 98-2000 rangers, out of the 3 the 2000 is my favorite because of the tail lights. The single window reverse light on the bottom and the all red lens otherwise is simplistic, functional and IMO just plain looks good.

This tail light only appears on the 2000, if you are behind one you can instantly tell its year.

In all other areas the 2000 is virtually identical to the 98 and 99, body parts, front end, bumpers.

I read somewhere that the regular cab 98 was 3 inches shorter on the inside than the 99 or 2000, I must be measuring in the wrong area because I can't see it.

I currently own a 2000 4WD, a 1999 4WD and a 2000 2WD in the middle of a nasty V8 swap where I have made every mistake that can be made during the extended adventure.

In the coming week I will post the entire swap adventure perhaps it will get me motivated to actually finish it.

 The 2000 is my personal favorite also because it has the 4.0L OHV, & not the early SOHC, but I like the grille & lights of the 01-03 so I swapper them into my 00. The one I currently have I purchased back in Oct of 2013 is my 3rd Ranger, the last one was also a 2000 w/4.0L & 4x4, the first one I had was a 96 4x4 w/4.0 & 5spd.

 I have a 2003 EDGE and actually did a tail light swap to 1999 tail lights (3-bulb setup). Had to run a wire from the multi-function switch to the back of the truck to make it happen, but I am pleased with how it works. I don't like combination tail/stop/turn... so when my son put custom tails in his 1999 XLT, he gave me his show room perfect tails. Love them!

 ON the exterior, the body lines are similar enough, I cant say prefer any one over the other.

I do prefer a stepside (Im hoping to change beds sometime in the future).

That really leaves bumpers and front valance.
For bumpers, I prefer the look of tubular off road style (think the truck at the end of BTTF).
For Valance... Idk.. I cant say I've really looked at them to know which one i prefer.

On the interior.. This is where I start to have a real opinion. I actually prefer the dash/cluster style of 96 and newer. With the 08 and newer if only because they have more interior accent lighting (IE: lighted door window/lock switches).

 If I had to pick a favorite it would be the reg cab long box 4x4. I like them because they're super rare, only offered for I think 1 or 2 years, and produced in really low numbers. There's a video on youtube of one that has a v8 swap with a lift and big tires, pretty badass little truck.
