My family recently inherited a 2002 Ranger Xlt supercab 4.0 auto from my grandfather who recently passed away and the truck has a few little issues.

First issue is the door ajar light stays on all the time, I sprayed wd40 in all the door latches and repeatedly opened/closed all the doors and it's still on.

Second issue is the truck doesn't start right away when cranking over, but if I cycle the key on/off a couple times then it will start just fine, maybe the fuel pump is getting weak?

It does have an intermittent miss while driving, but I'm pretty sure the plugs and wires are original so I'm thinking new plugs/wired will take care of that.

I will get pics up tomorrow. I'm going to be playing around with this weekend, going to give it a serious cleaning.

First off sorry for your loss. The door ajar light is a bad switch in one off the doors. The slow start could be related to the miss and could be cured by a tune up like you said. It could even be a fuel issue. Low fuel pressure and low volume of fuel could cause this. Try changing the filter first. If the problem still exists check the fuel trims. Just because you have plenty of pressure doesn't mean you enough volume. Low volume is a sign of a weak pump or a clogged filter. Post pictures and your findings

If it has rear doors the switches in them are more likely to be stuck than the fronts. Happens from only opening them once in years, usually the passenger rear.

Easy to check your best bet would be to hop on ebay and grab a EVTM for that year.

Looked it over today and found a couple more things, it needs an oil change badly so that will get done this week, but we did find it does need a lower ball joint on the passenger side. It does need some tlc but I think it will be a nice truck when it's done.

Pics cause everybody likes pics.

Little update on the 02, still haven't looked into the slow start yet, but got some other issues with it taken care of. The door ajar light issue was resolved with more spraying of the door latches and actuating them. Other issues that got taken care of were it had a bad blower motor resistor and some bulbs in the gauge cluster were burnt out. Just going to tinker with it over time.

Haven't posted in this thread in awhile, Did a bunch of work to the truck yesterday, replaced the bad lower ball joint, replaced all 6 spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body and IAC, swapped out the old steering wheel with a junkyard picked one that was in much better shape, no more Jeep steering wheel cover.

Nice looking Ranger. I would check the other 3 ball joints, because if 1 is bad it is more then likely the others are not far behind.
