 I looked and didn't anything on this topic, I'll try the search after I post this, but if some has a quick answer. Just bought this truck, 2001 XLT single cab. The cable for the spare hoist has been cut, I'm NOT driving around with a spare in the bed :crazy, I am hitting the salvage yards tomorrow and a replacement host is on my list. Are these a PITA to remove? Should I just buy new if they're cheap enough, if so where is a good place for parts like these besides the dealer? Thanks

Never had to replace one either.  I could see it being difficult to remove, as it lives under the truck in road grime.  Give it a try.  As for new, I have purchased from http://www.lmctruck.com/ and https://www.rockauto.com/ .  Both are good.

 super easy to unbolt
Make sure you have a spare tool so you can lower a tire at the yard if needed

I like to soak the whole used assembly in ATF for a night before installation, then unwind and re wind before hanging the tire on it....that way it gets lubed and a coating of atf

 I replaced mine and before installing the new "used" one, I unwound the entire cable and slathered it with grease that contains anti-seize. Then I wound it back in and installed on the truck.

Never another problem, through at least 6 more Illinois winters and the crap they spread on the roads these days.

 Thanks guys. I was able to secure one this weekend from one of the salvage yards here locally. I think to install it I may have to remove the 2 furthest rear bolts for the bed to lift it a little as the first hoist I found I could not get out from under the bed. The second one I found was easy as there was no bed lol. Either way I'll clean it up and get the cable lubed before installing.
