Driveshaft leaking, gearbox seal? - Drivetrain Tech - Tech Section

As luck would have it, i don't have time for fixing this, or anything else, so this all sucks....

Anyway, i'm getting a small pool of ATF under the truck, it seems to becoming from the driveshaft as it exits the gearbox. Does anyone know the cost to fix this and what's involved?

You should be able to just unbolt the driveshaft from the differential and slide it back out out of the transmission. As for the seal I'd go with the cheapest,but I'm a tightwad too. Mark the yoke on the differential and side of the driveshaft with chalk or marker too make sure the driveshaft is put back in the same way it came out,if you put it back in 180 degrees off from where it was it can throw the balance off and it'll shake real bad.

NATIONAL!!!! They are the leader in seals and seal tech, Duralast SUCKS LOL

You only need to drop the driveshaft

To replace that seal is pretty easy, pull old one out, clean surfaces, press new seal in place CAREFULLY and evenly
Put a little ATF of the seal and D shaft before sticking it back in the trans

Thank you both, sounds like i can manage this one myself :)

I'm assuming i'll get ATF leaking out when i pull the shaft? or is the line below the output level?

Yes jack up the back. The amount that comes out I feel is substantial, I have a plastic plug made for this I use. Was a cheap tool you should just get one, let me see if I can find a pic

Edited: here is the exact one I have, hollow to accommodate the spline.
