My newest adventure on my 19 YO Ranger is the pick up bed floor turning to swiss cheese. The bed floor cross supports are all rotted away & missing sections of them & every where there were spot welds that attached the supports to the bed floor is where they rusted through.

Since I did not have the $700.00 + dollars the junk yards wanted for a Ranger bed I had to find one else where, so I checked out Craigslist. The ones I was finding either were saying you have to buy the whole truck, or were not even calling me back. A couple weeks ago I found one in northern N.J., & after exchanging a few e mails & him sending me many photos we agreed on $100.00 for the bed. I removed the bed off my Ranger & temp mounted the tail lights to the frame of the Ranger my wife & I drove the 2 hours from southern N.J. to northern N.J. to pick up the replacement bed. We removed the bed off a Ranger the owner was ready to scrap & installed it on my Ranger for the drive back south. The replacement bed had a rotted section of the floor all the way to the l/s front, the l/s of the front bed support, & the lower couple inches of the l/s of the front bed panel. The only good part of my old bed was the area that is rotted in the replacement bed, so I took some measurements & cut out of my old bed what I need to repair the replacement bed.

Today I cut out the section of the bed floor, the lower l/s section of the bed front panel, & the front bed support rail.

I had to fabricate a new front bed support rail from some leftover sheet metal I had laying around from another project, & a small patch for the l/s lower front corner.

Tomorrow I am going weld in the the lower front corner patch, & the front bed support rail.

Nice!! I noticed the jump seat delete? I've been trying to figure out what to do with that space in my truck. Unless I run into a pygmy cheerleading squad ( because they are super small) no one is ever going to ride back there.

Really? No rear jump seats? Oh yeah buddy I like it, that gives me room to mount stuff

You want speakers back there? cargo space? room for camping gear? place to carry spare fluids/parts I can come up with some ideas :)

Good job on the bed replacement so far!
Check out weldable primer for your body panel repairs
everytime I used to weld metal together to repair body parts eventually the weld would start to rust and the repair would go to shi&
Now I coat both parts with weldable primer FIRST then weld, then coat with your primer/paint/filler/ rust inhibitor
Keep up the good work! $700 for a bed, what the hell are they smoking
I can buy two trucks for $700 most weeks

Saturday I welded in the patch on the l/s front lower corner of the bed where the front bed support rail welds to, & today I welded in the front bed support rail that I fabricated.

Thanks Jim. I have a Lincoln Weld Pak 155 that runs on 220V. It is about 20 years old, I had purchased it when I got the Mustang to start doing the sheet metal repair on it. I also purchased an auto dimming welding helmet instead of the non dimming one that came with the machine. I had originally purchased it as a flux-core welder which I soon converted it to gas which was a great addition, it makes much cleaner welds with the gas.

OK now on to today's work, I tacked in the floor patch.

Having access to a welder (and the skills to use it) are very handy to have. I haven't run a bead of weld in close to 40 years; and I wasn't good at it then.

Mike, I am not that great with welding but good enough to get the job done. Today I welded in the patch on the l/s lower corner of the front panel of the replacement bed & sprayed some paint on it so it doesn't rust. I have one more small rust spot on the passengers side of the bed floor that I need to fix but ran out of welding gas.

I had a linex bedliner sprayed in my 07 and it worked great. Once I retired the truck from work detail I had them repray it with the linex premium. It keeps it from fading and retains a shiny almost wet look.

Just checked I have a linex about a half hour away north of me. I looked on their website and their work is almost artistic, one big thing missing from the site was... any prices at all. The message being if you have to ask you can't afford it.

I had got a quote from linex about 5 years ago and it was almost $700 to do the bed in my stepside, I couldn't afford that so I chose to do it myself. But their work does look phenomenal.

When I bought the truck in 2014 it cost $400 through the dealer and would have cost $600 for me. The repray with premium linex in 2018 was $400.

When my truck was being painted I cut the liner back on the bed rails. After using it for masonry 4years all I did was pressure wash it and it came clean enough to recoat. They even removed  and re did the tail gate for free.

The guys at my location were awesome

That stuff is pretty expensive, is it not? Looks like you plan for this bed to out-live yourself! LOL

$50.00 for a gallon at Summit Racing. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/poi-45404
Yes Michael, I am hoping it lasts for the rest of the life of the truck.

Today I put a chain across the 2 back in bed tie down hooks & stood the bed on its front panel so I could finish coating the bottom of the pickup bed & the cross rails with POR-15. This worked out very well since I have a few dents I wanted to knock out & have to drill out a broken bolt for the l/s mud flap brace.

nicely done!!!

LineX is some nice stuff, Eddie Moneys truck and the 98 we have been working on both have LineX bedliners....looks as good as new. I like it because the lines are so clean, meaning you can wax right up to the lineX and wipe it clean, no messy jagged lines. LineX is top notch! You get what you pay for.............
