Erm, not that I know anything about Rangers, but can't you just drop the Jalapeno's engine into the ex cab while you play with the 5.0?

You're not working?  Or did I miss some subtle sarcasm? :-)

Jalep has a 3.slow.

3.0 has a different transmission than the 4.0, won't bolt up.

Jalep doesn't have native power windows. The module that controls that on the ex cab probably won't synch with the ECU from the 3.0 which will have to be used if the 3.0 is.

Since different transmissions the driveshaft length would be different in the back than is on either truck.

So it opens up a whole "other" can of worms, not to mention the pats from the 3.0 truck would have to go to the 4.0 truck including the magic ring under the key with its little box on the bottom of steering column, the module behind the passenger air bag.

SO much easier to just bolt another 4.0 in there if you can find one.

The 5.0 would be easier to put in the ex cab than the 3.0 and I did briefly consider it, but unleashing a fresh driver (my son) on the road for the first time with an engine meant for a vehicle 1500LBS heavier AND has performance enhancers like headers and a transfer case that allows 2WD (not an option in the old V8 expos/mounties they are full time AWD).

The 5.0 system I have is out of a 97 and did not have PATS. Whatever I put it in will ignore pats signals.

Though I have a major in sarcasm, the company I've worked at since I've been in Columbus and helped them take decades of technology jumps in the area of machining used the covid thing as a convenience to get me off the books. 17 years.

Wasn't hard though, they had all manual machines some older than Chris and myself combined. I took them from 1962 tech to about 2010. Some of the machines were much older.

After reading that post, there is simply NO WAY I would ever swap engines in a Ranger.  Just isn't worth it, with all the mind games the modules create.  The power window thing though...

ArcticWolf1911 added power windows, locks and mirrors to his otherwise manual Ranger XLT.  He had a rust problem with the bottoms of both doors, so he bought full power doors and wired them in just like Henry Ford intended.  But he didn't have to swap any modules.  He doesn't have keyless entry... YET as I think we have to enable that via ForScan.

I'm sorry to hear that, Jim.  Somehow, I missed that... if you indeed posted about it.

Ordered the camber adjusting bolts and a fresh set of KYB's from RockAuto to complete the TTX install.

Jim, looks like Ford are taking lessons from Apple ( or is it other way about?) - I'll stick to the low tech engineering cars where you can swap pretty much anything with minimum hassle.

The only way I would put a 5.0 in the 04 is to go the carb route with a emissions waiver to avoid the module nightmare.  I can do it in 4 years without the emissions waiver here in GA.

So 20 years old is the magic number in GA?  Some states are 25 or more.

In GA, any V8 swap stops the emissions with a waiver on the Ranger. It is actually any engine that was not originally offered by the manufacturer. A 2.3 Ecoboost or Cummins would do it also.

so you meet with a referee they check out your swap and give you a green light or tell you to go back and add some emissions stuff based on whatever drivetrain you installed
Been through that a few times, to the point where the ref and I were buddies. I am happy to be in Idaho now no emissions......

I have paperwork that shows my BII tailpipe emissions back in the late 90's with a 2.9 and 5 speed
Then same truck same emissions station tailpipe emissions with a 4.0 and auto
Then same truck same emissions station tailpipe emissions with a 5.0 and auto

The 5.0 BLOWS LESS EMISSIONS then both other earlier drivetrain's, even with two additional cylinders and more liters of displacement!
Why you ask? Because the 98 OBDII computer and emissions systems on the 5.0 are way more efficient then they were in 1988 and 1993

Eventually they stopped allowing me to get tested in CO, not due to the v8 but due to 35" tires...........so I would have to borrow tires smaller then a 35 if I wanted to renew my tags. BYE BYE CO!!! Now I can stuff 37's if I want

In GA, once you put a non-factory available engine in your vehicle and get the non-standard engine waiver, emissions are not necessary.  You also have to understand that emissions are only required in the metro Atlanta and surrounding area, the other 90% of the state doesn't have the headache.

That is why I love messing with cars from the 60's & early 70's, no emission hassles. If I wanted to stuff a big block 460 into my 69 Mustang I could & since it is older then 25 years no inspection & emissions test if I register it as a classic.

yes! Pre smog pumps and cat converters!!
But also no cool EFI and computer controlled transmissions
Idaho = no tailpipe emissions = happy swap possibilities
Also legal here to rid yourself of the smog pumps on those 80's cars and trucks.......so stupid to make people put smog pumps back onto engines before they can register and get plates......... when you cannot even buy the pump or parts anymore!!!
