I went with a more subtle change in LED's from the original config, instead of the 20 SMD fryers I had in for that pic I snapped a year ago on the bench I have been using COB style. Even though they are sorta flat they have a more even light dispersion than the multi SMD's, and out of all the ones I have installed on both my trucks I have had no failures.

MULTIPLE failures on the multi SMD style LED's regardless of source. The rubberish goo that the LED's are immersed in for the cob style I think acts as a shock absorber so you can actually drive your car. No proof of this except for personal experience. Not as bright but they spread better and last longer I'll consider that a win.

Now my OHC oh boy, I'm going to try to adjust the settings for directions but it doesn't seem to have an east. Goes from north west to north and back to north west when you head east. Maybe it is the magnet in the sub no idea.

I have been tracking down a problem where the cruise control pods on the steering wheel simply do not light up. Finally figured out why.

Since I was going to replace that assembly anyway that is behind the steering wheel.. you know the one with the coiled up ribbon that connects the airbag and cruise pods to the rest of the truck, I decided to make a concentrated effort to make the pods light up. I had the complete assembly with all harnesses from the green expo I gutted.

This is what the connector is supposed to look like going to the steering wheel:

zoom in and notice there is a wire coming out of every hole, even 2 in one of them.

So here is what I found under the dash:

Notice anything missing? This is coming from the truck, the steering wheel wires plug in to this.

So I ran a wire and all is well, lights work now.

Either it never worked from the factory or the harness was replaced with one that did not have cruise control. Since all indications are that the harness itself is original I'm leaning toward it being like that from the factory. It never has worked!

On to the next of 100 things....

When it gets dark.

The LED is actually too bright I'm going to add a resistor to bring it down to the intensity of the other ones. I only did the left have not modded the right yet.

Thinking of going with a different LED, these intense blues have a hint of purple.

I also installed today a Buggman blue LED for the fog light switch. Funny thing the fog light (have not installed left yet) doesn't even work.

I need a new valence too, the current one is the wrong shade for some reason. Much too light.

So in one step I'm going to pull the bumper, blast and paint the tow hooks unless I come across 1998 tow hooks first (flat and MUCH beefier), put a darker valence on and do something with the fogs. I want it to look ALMOST stock but would like a really intense LED in there. Like quad cree or something.

Jim, my 2000 Ranger was the same way, it was missing the wire to power the cruise control pod lights. I had to add it to mine.

Jim it might have something to do with the build date. When were your 2000 Ranger's built?. My 2000 Ranger was built 3/00.

Did some more over the weekend, installed door speakers and baffles. Everything just fit, I expected it to give me more problems.

And after trimming:

The foam baffles I used:

Since I had the door panels off took the time to install the black arm rests I got from black06xlt on this forum:

Hope you got a plan B. Lol.

Looks great. Cant wait to see a night shot. You have a real interesting shade of blue LEDs.

Are you going to keep a book under the console pad? My 99 had that console and I replaced that hinge so many times.

I don't know, it does seem like it should have a little support doesn't it?

After install was the first time I have seen how they were designed to sit lol my ex cab is touching so it must be broke already (I really had no idea I thought the arm rest was supposed to lay against the lid) and the only other vehicle I had with a shorty was a 99 expo that didn't have one at all, completely off. I still have the console and bought an arm rest for it to keep the console company sitting in my garage.

I don't 100% like it anyway being it is vinyl. I'm going to see how long it lasts before I go re designing it. Maybe not.

The first time you reach into the back seat area and put any weight on the arm rest it snaps. I knew better but my helpers didnt. I've never understood the design other than planned parts purchases. I hated it. After replacing the hinge a couple times the screw holes on the underside began to strip.

I think there is another shorty console that the arm rest sets flat on top

Thanks, I have some UCA's and lower balls to put on first. I bought the fancy ones that 410 recommended, the mevotech TTX's. Can't afford the bearings yet but have the timken picked out and will use a torque wrench this time.

Then alignment then the fancy wheels. I still feel 50/50 about them I think they might look too childish. If they do I'm going black.

Just a heads up...

The most recent Timken bearing cassette I bought was for a Taurus. $100+ and it's Chinese which was not what I expected or wanted. It will probably be years before I put enough miles on it to know if it's any good or not. In my experience, the quality of Chinese stuff is hit or miss (mostly miss) regardless of whose name is on the box.

I'm not saying that you won't find a domestic Timken part for a Ranger. Just something to watch out for.

Maybe with Tinken's quality control they are at least similar. Still time to make up my mind. Thanks again-

I have installed timkens on wifes FJ cruiser, My excursion ($$$$),my step sons F350 and another full size all in the last 2 years. We had one bad Timken on the F350, the wheel almost FELL OFF
Rockauto replaced it and all has been well since BUT it did leave me looking more closely at the Timkens...meaning we used to swear by them....now I'm skeptical
So what do we use? Koyo for the FJ
Spicer for the fords? Motocraft?
We will all go broke!!!!!!!
