Ok so while driving Eddie today the needle on the oil pressure fell off. Very strange....  I was looking through my inventory of ranger parts to find a replacement gauge whe I found a set of silver faced gauges out of a ranger. If I remember correctly a 2003-2004??? I just seen 97steepside post in this months contest that he put a silver explorer cluster in his truck. My expo is a 96 5.0 the cluster I have is 03-04 ranger 4.0 will they interchange?

Kinda. If it is out of an 03 it should fit BUT..... a 97 had the fuel lockout light and the door ajar lights inverted, I'm guessing the 96 is the same. It is in the harness I could tell you the wires to switch BUT....

Do yourself a favor and put a tee somewhere and hook up a mechanical gauge for a few days to see if you are really dropping pressure or not. That is the only way you will know for sure.

OR did you mean physically "fell off" LOL. I took it as figuratively the needle went to zero.

No it literally fell off... its laying in the bottom of the cluster. Out of curiosity I hooked a mechanical gauge up to it temporarily and it carries 60 psi so I know that the oil pump is good and my gauge is bad. I've broke speedometers before but an oil gauge is a first for me.

Maybe the pointer just came off, do you see that little metal shaft sticking out still or did it fall off with the needle? If so just press it back on.

I have a couple of those laying around, the RH side out of a cluster.

What color is the cluster when it is lit up...is it blue like my 97?

When looking at the cluster all you see is a hole where the needle went. It lights up green

Got a spare one right here, green. I took the pin out to give to someone but you have one in yours you can put in it. These things pull right out, the mid section pulls out first then you can pull right and left.

This is the back:

Yes and no, it will plug in and work but your indicator lights like check engine and door ajar etc are pinned differently. My door ajar and fuel reset lights are different pinned but everything else is the same so I pulled the little bulb out of the fuel reset. The 96 might have a resister on the temp gauge but not 100 percent on that year range they did that. The way to tell is plug it in and start it and see if the temp gauge goes to h really quickly on the new cluster

Well that covers both LOL.

If it is on the left I can give you the wires to switch to make it right. I have an EVTM for a 97 and one for my 2000 also, those are the only 2 lights switched really strange.

you cannot put a 98+ cluster into a 96 wihout making some changes. The coolant and some other signals will not read properly
Some of the lights move around so you would have to re pin some wires
You CAN use the silver face plates on your 96 gauges, everything in the instrument cluster comes apart
resetting the needles can be alot of fun! must be done with power to the cluster...

I have several clusters from different year trucks if you need parts
They changed the cluster in the explorer a couple of times, 98+ was the big one because the 98 pcm uses digital signals instead of analog

Well its yours just be careful bringing the pin out of the old one, it was tougher than I thought and I bet easy to break off.

If you have done it twice or 8 times taking the cluster out only takes like 10 minutes I've done it quicker in a hurry. I have a 7mm magnetic socket hat is golden for these clusters. I did the first one without it and would never do it again.

1/4" dewalt impact with flex drive and 7mm / 8mm sockets I can have the knee guard off and cluster in my hand in about 7 minutes LOL
Which is good because when you do conversions part of the conversion is always fixing/customizing things in the instrument cluster and it seems I always have to pull them out 3-4 times in one day

After having a pocket full of cash for about an hour I bought a set of aluminum wheels with new 31x10.50's but the kicker is the guy brought out 2 new 31's still have stickers on them and 2 more wheels still in the box never mounted bought all wheels and tires for $400 so the sport trac has 31's on it now
