Your post brings this one (probably really stupid) question: What is a "P" head, and what is the difference between "P" and "Non-P" heads?  And then, why is one better than the other?

That is correct on the 96-97.5 GT40 heads (non p) the EGR ports are INSIDE the lower intake, upper intake and the throttle body elbow.
Your EGR valve bolts to the back of the throttle body elbow which is where the EGR ports inside the engine lead to. So there is NO EGR tube on the passenger side exhaust manifold 96-97.5 non P heads.

On the 97.5-01 model with gt40-P heads (3 bar heads) the internal plumbing no longer exists and the EGR sampling is done with the external metal tube on top of the passenger side exhaust manifold

So when I see a 97 model year Explorer with a 5.0 I can identify if it is an early GT40 engine or a later GT40P engine by looking for that tube
Let me get some pics posted to help explain (there are at least 3 variations of the GT40 upper and lower intakes on top of the 96-01 5.0 and you cannot mix match unless you really know your stuff with the EGR plumbing):

You can see why Ford would do this upgrade in 97.5, who wants hot exhaust gasses traveling through the intake elbow?? We don't.
Plus when they get plugged with carbon deposits there it no easy way to clean it all up....

Quote from wiki:
"The Explorer/Mountaineer heads (GT40P) are somewhat smaller, measured between 58-61cc chamber volume. Thus, GT40P cylinder heads may give a small bump in compression. ... Both have 1.84" intake valves, but the GT40 has a 1.54" exhaust valve whilst the GT40P cylinder heads have a slightly smaller one at 1.46"."

Best description I have seen:
The GT40 & GT40P heads had a few differences that are note-worthy, the most importantly being the bump in compression. The GT40P heads had a small combustion chamber ranging from 58-61cc while the GT40 heads had a 63-66cc combustion chamber. The GT40 heads have thermactor holes built in to connect to the EGR/smog equipment whereas the GT40P heads us an external EGR connective system. The GT40P heads also had a different spark plug placement making header choice important. GT40P specific headers are needed unless you use spark plug wires with 90 degree boots to clear the heads.

They are both good performance factory heads, the gt40's are a little more sought after because they are considered easier to modify for performance, flow matching etc. The nonsense about shorty headers and interference with the spark plug angles is silly...I have personally bolted GT40p headers to GT40 heads and vise versa, the change in spark plug angle is easily over come with some 45 degree spark plug wire boots.

At the end of the day they are both good!!!!

I use a 3/8" drive with 24" extension and go above the tire.....
Changing plugs on a 302 is EASIER then changing them on the v6 engines, they are more accessible with the v8
You can EASILY get to the spark plugs with any of the headers mentioned, its a straight shot from above the tire can do all 4 at the same time.........

You can order TMH from Robert, around $900 and can take 3-6 months to get them during Covid delays (I just ordered another set last week)
Or you can buy OBX headers for $700
OR homebrew

I am liking the homebrew idea for an upcoming project, I have made some new contacts in the spokane area that could be VERY handy for this..........
