I'm considering purchasing a 2000 Ranger 4x4 to replace my 1998 Tacoma whose frame has rusted out. One of my local mechanics indicated that some of the Rangers also had/have frame related problems - some about \"hangers\". What should I look for. I can easily see the frame under the bed due to the bed being converted to a flatbed.  Thanks! to ever can help.  Tommy Rosewood.

It all depends on where the truck was from and how well it was taken care of. I have a 2000 with the original "shackles" from the factory. My son has a 2002 that the rear shackles had to be replaced on.

You have to look at the frame toward the back, if it has an inordinate amount of rust (almost all frames will have powder rust) then the shackles might be toast.

Us ranger guys consider replacing rear shackles as periodic maintenance LOL but yes there was a "problem" but it is a relatively cheap fix.

Did you check for a recall on your Taco? I have a friend that just had his frame replaced for free because of a recall.

AND welcome to F-R!

Tommy, welcome to F-R. Where you located has a lot to do with when they will need to be replaced. My Ranger was built & spent its whole life in NJ where they (NJ) uses a lot of salt on the roads in the winter. I replaced the shackles & the hangers in 2014 when the drivers side shackle collapsed from rust. When I replaced them I also replaced the hangers also.
