Scared me, I was still at work stayed late to work on personal projects.

http://abc6onyourside.com/news/local/rescue-underway-after-person-trapped-in-car-under-downed-utility-poles

Wife was still home, if you were to stand on top of my house you could see the church they are talking about.

She and the kids were in the basement and heard and felt what sounded like a loud crash. We are without power and might be for another day or so. Our road intersects with hoover, the tornado(s) touched down less than a mile from our house.

The kid that was trapped in his car was rescued about a half hour ago. I guess it is serious when power lines are on top of you.

I'll take some pics tomorrow morning if I can get on hoover at that time.

That's scary!

Never did understand why the US power lines run on poles - apart from the high voltage distribution  lines across country  most of ours run underground.

Chris, I don't either. It's not like everyone don't pay enough, a standard household electric bill is over $100 USD. I look at the poles and wonder why we have extreme advancements in just about every other walk of humanity, but the power comes across the same poles as it did in 1950. Some of them are actually the same poles.

Somebody is making an incredible amount of money and we are not moving forward in this area.

Glad you're ok Jamman.  Tornadoes are scary.  Mother Nature has powers I cannot fathom.  Never forget who's really in control.

I'm glad it was far enough away from your house that the wife and yourself were barely affected. It was quite a show though, Di sent me a vid she took on her phone when the hail started, was quarter sized. Then they headed for the basement when the sirens started.

On the local map it shows it touched less than 3000 feet from my house (about 915 meters Chris) and one guy on the next door grove city feed said he saw it, said he couldn't tell it was a full tornado but saw debris twirling upward then the poles came cascading down. Probably hit one pole and the wires pulled the rest like dominos on a string.

It comes down to cost.  It costs on the order of 10 to 15x to put them underground.  In new developments they are underground, and buyers in those areas foot the bill for the added cost.  But to go back and convert is very expensive and time consuming to go through developed areas.  And it pisses people off.  There is nobody getting rich off of not putting all the power underground.  My Dad finished out his career working for Xcel in Denver as the Electric Distribution manager for the area.  Basically he ran the trouble truck division in Metro Denver.  They were not rolling in cash for sure.  It is a huge and expensive infrastructure to generate and deliver power to a municipality, let alone an entire state or the whole US.

Thank you for the insider info and didn't mean to 'dis your family, you can see where it would be easy to make that assumption since the first house I bought I was paying 36 bucks a month and now I pay 136 for about the same amount of KW. I believe I am funding some of those new underground wires myself.

I wonder how much it costs to maintain / repair damage to the poles.

If there isn't cash in the business then it sounds like the shareholders are ripping it out in dividends.

On new builds it can't cost that much to run in the ducts while the rest of the services are being laid.

Apart from the obvious blight on the landscape, those poles must claim a few lives from vehicles hitting them too.

Not a slight on my family at all.  Just want to allay misconceptions is all.  In the US, rate increases are regulated by the PUC in almost every location.  The Public Utility Commission has to approve all rate hikes no matter what they are for.  It is entirely possible that overall rates have gone up to cover the increased cost of all new business going underground.  All with oversite approval mind you.

Cost of repairs to poles due to people hitting them?  I'm not sure if you are serious or not.  Sure it happens, but not that often.  And usually it doesn't require a new pole as much as it does a new car.  And yes, new builds under ground are quite a bit more expensive.  Trenching costs more.  The wires cost more.  It's not like you can just dump the overhead lines on the ground and cover them with dirt.  Takes different wire.

Nobody gets rich off of buying stock in a utility.  Not sure why you think cash is just flowing out of them like a garden hose left on over night.  Just to give you idea what the infrastructure costs, the city of Boulder wanted to 'nationalize' power distribution in the city.  Take over the facilities, generation and distribution and run it at no profit in order to benefit their citizens.  The cost to pay back for the facilities was $1billion dollars.  Billion.  For one small city.  Fact checked and verified by both the court and the city.  Needless to say the plan stalled right there...
