 My son and I went out yesterday (04/10) to Academy Sports and he picked up 400 rounds of .45ACP, I got some Super X and CCI 22LR (just because).  We then went across the bridge into Kentucky and checked out the Rural King there.  He got 200 rounds of .357 and I got another 50 rounds of Critical Defense (my carry ammo).  They had 4 boxes of that on the shelf and although the guy would have let me have it all, I told him I didn't want to be "that guy", so I bought two and left two for someone else that may need it.  Before we went out, my son bought 1000 rounds of .556 Winchester white box FMJ from Academy Sports online (only place he could find a decent price with it actually in stock).

I love buying ammo! :-)

Winchester has ammo in a white box, a silver box and "Ranger" in a black box.  The white box is the least expensive ammo, so rapid-fire practice or the occasional mag dump for fun doesn't devastate your wallet quite so bad.

 For somebody that reloads "whitebox" is the stuff you buy for the cases to reload quality ammo in.

The WIN headstamp is some of the most durable brass out there. I did a test with some 9mm Winchester white box brass where I would re-load the brass after every trip to the range for just over a year. I went at least once a week with about a dozen trips twice a week. My guess is that I reloaded it about 65 times and only had one case failure. By comparison Tula Brass ammo the brass can only be used 2 or 3 times before it is no longer re-loadable. Angila lasts about 5 reloads, CBC will last 5 to 8 loads, and Perfecta will last about 4 loads - all of these headstamps I reload once and leave behind.

When the Range Officials see me dump my brass in the bin they know it is junk brass.

 That is good to know, Tony. We always save our brass even though we don't reload (yet). We lay out an old blanket and a tarp to make recovery a little easier. It doesn't catch it all, the majority of rounds land there.

 For what ya'll spent on ammo you could have had a single stage, 2 calibers of dies (pistol and rifle), scales, brass tumbler w/ media, bullets, primers, and powder.

 Got me a new Pistol  Happy Quarantine Day !

A Springfield 1911. Loaded, 9mm, S/S.




I like the 1911 Framed 9mm, Barrel is a Bull Barrel, thicker because of the smaller caliber rounds.

I missed the sale with the extra Clips and some other stuff, go figure, but I got a decent deal on this one, had to go to a store I don't like, but they were the only ones with the gun a wanted.   I read this one was going to be removed from eh California Acceptable Listing... WTF !

10 day waiting period, 6 more days, then off to the range with the Son-n-Law !

Add ons to come... 

-A Magwell, not sure which one yet but thinking either Techwell or S&A.

-New Grips when she arrive, thinking Ebony Grips but I like the Houge Smooth Aluminum Painted Black, AlumaGrips look good too. 
  Both are already set up for the Techwell Magwell.

-Sights, will try the Target Sights out at the range but thinking I want a set of Trijicon Night Sights, even during the day the help.

Nice! My Colt Government 9mm 1911 is my favorite shooter right now. Almost no recoil with 124gr Coated Lead RN at 1175fps for a fairly hot standard load. The Colt Govt came with the Novak fiber optic which works great for a range gun.  Does the Springfield magazine have the spacer at the rear or front of the magazine? I have 4 MecGar 10-round mags with the front spacer and they will not hold the slide open on the last round. The Colt has the spacer at the rear of the magazine.

I have been toying with getting a couple of 38 Super magazines and barrel to have a conversion gun. There is always that option.

Pretty much. 1) we have guns in the house. Most important thing for me is for them to learn to be safe with them. 2) they wanted a day out with dad (quarantine sucks). 3) it's fun. It was a nice morning, no more morning chill, but far from being hot (yet, 100 degrees starting next week).

There is a rail in the rear on the magazine.
Some I've seen with the indent on the front but that bothers me.

Interesting on the 38S, I'm in the 9mm mode and happy with the results, I'm looking at a 9mm EMP for CC.

I will look at the Novak fiber optic Sights, along with the Trijion (sp) Night Sights, time will tel, still have another 6 days before I can pick it up.

Too many thing to do too, many things wanted, never enough money.

Comes down to budget.... I have an RIA I LOVE, have well over 1000 rounds through it. Factory mag is trash, but other than that, really really good gun. Perfect EDC kind of gun. 

My next 1911 will be a Dan Wesson.

 I'm not the one toe ask, I'm new to the Pistol Game.
I purchased a Springfield XD9, acurate, and I like the feel of it, my son-n-law had one too.
From there after about three years, I checked out 1911's, found out they made 9mm versions, started reading about a lot of them and found out Springfield made one, I liked the looks, said I would buy one someday, found one at Turners for just under a K, read somewhere that they were going off the CA List, decided I better buy now.
All of the reviews are good, some say the grip is a little too wide, but there are slim grips.
My Friend got one, I try it liked it so I got it !
So you see I can't really tell you anything about ALL of the others and there are a lot, and I like the Springfield Brand.

 Scrambler82; Any extra magazines you get need to have the spacer at the back and the same style floorplate your OEM magazines have. I got a "deal" on the 4 used MecGar 10-round mags and 2 OEM LSI 9mm mags when a buddy of mine had his barrel reamed for 38 Super. They are OK for the range but beyond that they are just this side of useless. The fiber optic front sight works best with the yellow or orange fiber. The blue is useless. 

Eddie Money; My dad was a 1911 nut. During the late 60's to the late 80's he would sell one to finance buying another. He found fault with most and would change internal parts and springs while polishing other parts. It didn't matter if it was a Springfield Armory, Colt, Auto Ordnance, Kimber, or Dan Wesson Dad would find something he thought he could improve.  I also learned that an Auto Ordinance 10mm would make you soak your hand in ice water after shooting a magazine.

1911's have improved over the years. Dad always told me that the basic Colt should be my first choice if I bought a 1911. I have a 2017 Colt Government model in 9mm. The Govt model comes with a skeletonized performance trigger, Novak fiber optic sights, and a competition barrel. It has been a solid performer. It was just under $800 out the door when I got it. If I had it to do over again I would probably go with the same model but in 38 Super and get a 9mm conversion package.

 I have a buddy that is in his early 70's and he decided he could no longer shoot 38/357. He also reloaded. He gave me a call Friday to come by and pick up some reloading supplies. He gave me 2 boxes of 500-count Missouri 158gr coated SWC, about 1000 cases mixed 50/50 between 38 and 357, a pound of unopened IMR 4227, and a Redding 38/357 die set.

I haven't used IMR 4227 but it is supposed to be a very good magnum powder but it needs magnum primers. I have about 800 in stock so I will need to work up some loads. Once I have a load it will be shooting for the cost of primers, about 3 cents per round until I run out of powder. I should get about 450-470 rounds out of a pound if IMR 4227.

The dies are the best part. I have a set of Lee dies that I have been using. Lee dies will get the job done but it is like driving a stripped down Fiat 500. The Redding dies are like jumping behind the wheel of a F150 Raptor - no slop and a precise feel. I spent about an hour setting up the new dies for 357. I will leave the Lee dies set for 38 SPL. I pressed out 54 soft 357 mag loads with CFEpistol powder once I had it set up. Range day tomorrow.

 My son, who is new to the reloading scene, bought all Hornady equipment with the exception of the scale and powder trickler which are both (I think) Frankford Arsenal.  He has been playing with a light 357 load (both WC and SWC).  He's learned a lot in the couple of weeks he's been at it.  The Hornady and Frankford Arsenal stuff seems to be of good quality.

The 357, 41,  10mm, and 44 are all fantastic platforms to learn load characteristics.  They all have a wide range of bullet weights with a wide range of powder weight to make a slow round (1000fps and less), intermediate round (1000-1120 fps: sub-sonic), and to the heavy hitters above the sound barrier. 

A top end 38 Special +P load is usually my starting point with everything but bare lead on my 357.  There are some powders like HS-6 and IMR 4227 that are so-so with a regular primer/light crimp but they really come alive with a magnum primer and a heavy roll crimp where they can pick up another 90-120 fps with the same load. I have found sorting brass by brand, then by length (trim fixes this), and internal volume will make consistent loads easier. For target rounds I like sub-sonic and hunting/SD rounds I like 1150fps and faster.

 He has 3 or 4 different powders and is using CCI 550 primers exclusively (for now, anyways).  He has been experimenting with the different powders/charges with both WC and SWC to see what results he gets.

 I am trying to get close to a 1050fps load with a 158 gr Coated Lead SWC with standard primers and CFEpistol powder.  There is no load data as it is below a 357 Mag load and above the 38 Spl load. There is no 38Spl +P load. I am in the grey area. I will be upping the load on another batch as I maxed at 1028 fps with what I tested today. I am still a grain and a half below the MAG specs and the  1275fps max velocity.  

My guess is that 7.6gr of CFEp will be the sweat spot. I will find out next week. I will also be testing 38 brass with mag primers, and IMR 4227 powder with the same 158gr coated LSWC. I need to nail these down as I have a supply of 148gr coated lead, hollow bottom, wad cutters waiting for me to pick up next week.
