I don't really get into calibers like 6.8, 224 valkarie, 6.5 grendel / creedmore, etc. I can't justify the added expense and difficulty in finding the ammo compared to 5.56, 30-06, 22lr, .308, list goes on.

Speaking of ARs, I decided to tidy up the knots that hold my guitar strap onto Project Vietnam. It's holding up great, although granted I'm not packing it around with me everywhere. Also swapped out the small button fwd assist on my A4 to the teardrop A1 style. I find I can't slap the A4 as hard as I can the A1 without feeling like I just high-fived a nailgun. I had it laying around anyway, so I thought I might as well use it.

Learned tonight that 9mm WWB 115gr JHP is an awful deer cartridge.

I hit a deer, which I talk about in another thread, and he was not immediately killed, much to my dismay. I had my Beretta 92A1 in 9mm with me, luckily.

One shot didn't do it. Two didn't do it. After that, I went three-four-five. That did it. The last two were probably unnecessary, but I couldn't stand watching him twitch and die painfully like that.

On another note.... Keep earplugs in your console! God my head hurts now....

Oh boy :(

I had a "similar" experience when i was much younger with a rat and a .22 air rifle - though thinking about it at the time, and thinking back after all these years, i feel that it was just death twitches for the most part.

I understand the way you felt on this, i'd be the same :( The penetration with a 9mm should have been complete, which is part of what makes me think what i do in the above paragraph, doesn't make it any easier to watch though.

Lastly, WWB JHP? I didn't know that was a thing, did you mean ball?

I found out a squirrel without a head can still scurry under a log from a tree. I'm voting death twitches also.

My original CW trainer was an ex cop and had actually had to fire his 9mm INSIDE HIS CAR during an attack. He had permanent hearing damage.

Still glad you are OK.

Yep, Winchester White Box Jacketed Hollow Points.

https://www.brownells.com/ammunition/handgun-ammo/usa-white-box-ammo-9mm-luger-115gr-jhp-prod95277.aspx

I'll give the round a mulligan in this case given it's labeled for personal protection and not deer hunting. You're probably right about it just being death twitches, but with that being said, I say 5 cases well ejected. At least I knew without any reasonable doubt he (she, actually) was dead.

Reminds me of when my Grandfather (Who was a truck driver) had to do the same thing, but with a crowbar.

I vote for the WWB JHP's over the crowbar method, ugh, that'd be rough :(

Oh, definitely. If I ran into this thing commonly, I think I'd start packing my M1 with me. Heck, even an AR15. Actually, a 357 or 44 would do well for that kind of thing. Easy to stow and should be plenty powerful for what winds up being a point blank shot.

Deer hide is tough. A JHP will not have much penetration. A FMJ round nose (ball ammo) would have been a better choice as it would have penetrated further. Shot placement is also important. On most mammals one of the best places to put them down with one shot is halfway between the eye socket and ear.

Point blank wouldn't have a problem, but yeah, ball would have penetrated further (not needed at point blank though)

There was something I noticed that I'd like to bring up.

Many years ago, I had fired a walther P22, 22lr handgun without hearing protection. I had forgotten to put my ear plugs in. First shot gave me a bit of a ring, but nothing long lasting.

I expected worse last night. It wasn't until shot four or five that my ears actually started to ring. I find that odd. Anyone have any input on that one?

That also crossed my mind, but despite what was happening, I felt quite calm. If I had to describe how I felt at the time, I'd say this: "Well sh**. Here we are..."

Still a 'shock' to the system, regardless of how you felt, the darkness will have lent itself a surreal feeling as well.

One of the biggest mistakes I have made with shooting a pistol is shooting inside the cab of a truck without hearing protection...

I think I've heard of them before. When I go to get my 686 6" S&W, I'll pick up a custom holster from Savoy leather. Having trouble deciding which one out of these two, but that's a ways away. I still have that Romanian AK to get and something else I'm not ready to mention yet.

I use Dennis at Dragon Leatherworks. He made the holster that Scott Bakula uses for NCIS New Orleans.

Well, my day got a little brighter.

My next door neighbor gave me a Charter Arms 38 special "Undercover" that he's had for a while. It's a beautiful piece, and with it he gave me two boxes of ammo. I'm not entirely sure why he decided to give it to me, but I won't complain. I wanted a snubnose blued revolver to add to my collection, and now I have one.

He mentioned he never fired it, and I'm glad he didn't. He ammunition he had for it was a hodgepodge if I ever saw one. There are 13 different stampings on 103 rounds. It's mostly Winchester, Remington and Federal, but there's some others too. There's a round of speer, S&W, PMC, FC 88/86/84, Western, W-SUPER-W, 3-D, W W, and supervel.

The scary part is, several of the rounds, probably close to half, are +P, and I even saw one +P+. Given the age of the revolver, I warned him about +P ammo and how it could grenade the revolver. Had he actually used this ammo, I fear he could have been seriously injured. I mentioned this right before he gave the revolver to me.

Given the very wide variety here, I'm going to elect to not fire this ammuntion at all through this handgun. I plan on getting a 686 at some point which I know can tolerate anything in these boxes. They appear to all be factory wadcutter type ammo with nickel cases. The boxes claim these to be 'police cartridges', and 158 grains. I have no way of proving that, of course. I'll con my father into helping me buy some .38s that I actually know what they are. None of the ammunition is corroded in the least.

I'm going to get a very mild .38 load if I can. After a good cleaning and relubricating, the old wheelgun seems to be perfectly OK. The bore is nice an shiny, too.

Something worth mentioning, the hammer isn't rusty as it appears in the photo. It's case hardened. Photo doesn't do it justice.

Sounds like you need better photo's then ;)

Nice going, i wish someone would randomly gift me firearms :)

As you might imagine, that is the copy of the little Chiefs Special i pictured on the front page - it's very pleasant with any regular .38's through it considering it's size/shape.

That's the first thing I thought of when I went to post here.

It was quite sticky and stiff, but a little 3-in-1 oil fixed that right up.

Sounds like it probably wants some good gun cleaner on everything before re-oiling correctly. The only thing that's gonna make it sticky/stiff will be crap, lint etc.

I would toss the +p and +p+ ammo. This would make a good truck gun. I would load it with 124 gr ammo, alternating between ball and JHP when loading it up.
