Thanks Anthony, since I only have forscan on my kids laptop I'll have to figure something out. He's running a minecraft server on his and of course that trumps my mere speedo calibration.

I have an old dell with an I3 laying around and a small SSD guess I'll have to bend to the microsoft gods and load windows if I want to start figuring out the finer points of forscan.

Android tablet? You just have to read the VSS PID from the PCM so the android version would work.

I have successfully (after about a half hour battle) activated windows on my free laptop.

Long story, I work on peoples computers, I worked on a Dell Inspiron N5040 (I3) for a guy, hard drive had bad sectors, he didn't want to put money in it, I pulled the drive and got his pictures off of it, handed it to him, he handed it back to me to put on my pile.

Had 4 gigs of memory, I had a spare 2 gig laying around and put it in.

I had a copy of windows 8.1 pro I bought for a Hyper-V controller. Upgraded to 10 when it was free, had it on a server at home doing nothing. It was on a little 64G SSD.

I pulled the SSD and put it in the laptop. Even though I bought legally the pro builders version of windows it still took me a half hour to activate it when I "changed hardware". I eventually had to find the original windows 8 COA sticker in the bottom of a crate with like 4 more laptops on top.

Good news is I'm a bluetooth adapter away from having a free FORSCAN laptop. Posting from it now.

Yay.

The thing that keeps me from using Linux is my job. Everything there runs on a Windows box. So I have to nursemaid 6 physical servers and 7 virtual servers to keep the plant and its workers productive. At home, I still keep a domain controller/file server running to store all our personal crap on from the plethora of laptops, desktops and tablet PCs. Gawd, I hate computers...

Yellows came in. Yellow doesn't penetrate the blue overlay at all, like no light. Yay another failure.

Okay Jim. You need to talk to my son, Cameron for a bit about LEDs, colors and filters. He's been all over this both with research and real life experimenting since he was old enough to say "bulb". He can save you a LOT of grief! :)

Seconded, Cam has helped me a lot with many projects I did, and helped me learn what I know about clusters (even if he doesn't think so)

Hmmmm... licking guns. I got some Hoppes number 9 on my finger once then forgot and licked my finger. Tasted terrible!

He's been focused on something (non-firearms) as of late and has thrown himself fully into that. He will resurface sometime... just not sure when.

It was all back when I was living with terrible roommates and started going to the junkyard 3 tines a week to get away from them... Took home a lot of clusters to figure out how they work and how to get mine to be as best as possible. The way I work, I talk things through with someone (even if it is really just me talking to nothingness) and that brings up new ideas. He was the dark pit I talked to and I was the same for him with the projects he was doing.

Ah, I understand.  Actually, my boss and I do that when we get stuck on something.  Just go to the other person and start explaining what it is you are trying to do.  Most times, you will have an epiphany while explaining it.  I also talk to myself a lot... I know I look like a mad scientist or something, but HEARING it out loud usually makes things clearer and you see flaws in your thinking before you actually make them.  So much better that way!

"Someone" mentioned this thread to me, and I thought I'd pop in and share a little while I take a short break from retexturing and asset-making.

The reason why you didn't get any color at all from the face is because a filter and colored light in combination work on a very different principle than mixing two pigments (paint)or two colors of light in a given area.

Colored lenses and filters of the sort can be thought of working in a similar principle as, say, a coffee filter.

A coffee filter will only allow certain things to pass through it. The pigments in the gauge cluster and other non-clear lenses will treat light the same way, to put it in layman's terms (not that I know the scientific terms).

A perfectly clear lens has no filtering capabilities, so nothing is removed from the light passing through it.

A colored lens will only allow light of that color to pass through. To get a little more technical, light and the way we perceive colors is a complicated thing and works on the princple of wavelength, measured in NM or nanometers. The wavelengths of light we see are spread across the visible light spectrum.
Fun fact: this principle is what allows rainbows to happen.
Here's a diagram if anyone wants one.

As you can see, each color has it's own wavelength. To better understand how this filtering principle works, we must understand how we see light and how we can see color. Unit of measure isn't the whole story.

Take something we're all familiar with, a bright red apple. The entire visible light spectrum hits the apple's red skin and every color EXCEPT red is absorbed. The red wavelength bounces off and into our eyes, thus we see red.

Green grass appears green because every wavelength except green is absorbed. Green bounces off into our eyes. Same goes for yellow, blue, purple, etc.

Colored lenses and filters work in a very similar way. Take a coated 3157 amber bulb; again something we're all familiar with.

Tungsten filaments produce warm white light, which contains every color in the visible spectrum. There are different colors of 'white' (warm, cool, daylight) but I won't muddy the waters with that right now.

The amber filament reflects every color except amber back for it to bounce around in the bulb, except the amber wavelength which passes right through. ONLY the amber can pass through. Make note of that, that's important.

In the case of your cluster, you're trying to push pure* yellow light through a blue filter. LEDs that are not white only produce one wavelength of color, in this case yellow. There's all this yellow light bouncing around inside, but it cannot pass through the blue.

At some point you do get what I like to call 'oversaturation' of a filter, at which point the color quality degrades. Much like a balloon, it can only hold back so much before you start getting things other than what you wanted. You can see this effect in color coated bulbs around christmas time. Those blue bulbs are blue, but it's not a rich and vivid blue, usually. However, the amount of light this takes to happen with a colored LED is massive. I'd hate to think how bright that LED would have to be to push past the blue filters.

Welp, there you go.

Great chart thank you. I think I'll put the whites back in and install it while I'm working on my green one. I have a silver cluster on the way and I'm going to work on sanding the green off (that green filter for some reason doesn't pass much light regardless of what you hit it with) and putting green LED's behind it but want to put white LED rings around the pointers so they look right.
This is loads of fun, this thread is most informative and portions will end up in the tech notes.

Another cluster question.
What is that electronic module in the upper left, like an insert type card? There are 3 in front of me right now, they all look different, but 2 of these clusters have been in my ranger and acted identical.

I saw that question asked somewhere else just recently (don't remember where).  Hopefully, someone will shed some light on it.

Figured it out, it is written right on the module.
It's the "Anti Slosh" module, so your fuel gauge doesn't bounce up and down while you drive. The float is constantly moving and if it didn't have a buffer between it and the gauge to average it out it would constantly move.

I don't know if they are different but if they are the anti slosh board would have to go with the fuel gauge when switching things in a cluster.
