Welcome to F-R!

97 is the last year of the beams and a lot of people consider it a better option for 4 wheeling than the IFS in the later models (98 to 11). What is the end result you are looking for, daily driver, 4 wheeling beast, drag racing?

Daily driver is good!  Main goal is a safe, reliable vehicle first and foremost, I assume?  We can possibly coerce you into a few cool mods to make your son's truck different from the others?

You just entered ranger modding country. Mhoward is a museum of ranger mods. I would suggest mustang rear disc brakes for your first mod. Imo it's a safer better setup compared to stock drums.

+1 on the Mustang rear disc brake mod!  Not difficult and adds a level of safely to your truck.

Right now we are looking at the raptor Mod.  We are at the suspension lift part and saving some money to purchase a 3" suspension lift kit. Doing some homework to see best price/brands.

Sounds like a great project!  Be sure to get plenty of pictures!  You can start a build thread for your truck HERE to post your pics and tell us how you are progressing... anything that pertains to your truck.

raptor mod? As in fiberglass body kit? Or is there a raptor mod I am not aware of.....the three yellow lights on the grill and king shocks?

Welcome! 97 is a wicked good year for the ranger. 97 has dana 35 ttb with dual piston calipers up front, a pushrod 4.0 engine that can go for many hundreds of thousands of miles. Is this truck a stick or auto?
Skyjacker makes a nice 2" lift coil and shock package that is a great way to get started with the ttb suspension.

ah yes glassworks fun fun, shipped to New York? Now we know you are serious
I get my fiberglass from So Cal shipped via greyhound bus.........only way can afford shipping!
Your going to need the axle width to fit underneath that body kit.......otherwise looks silly!

I thought they sold different width kits. I will have to look into that more.  Do you have any other suggestions for fiberglass kits?  We are not 100% sold on this project. We have quite awhile before we get to body.  Thanks

the raptor body kit I have seen has a pretty large bulge in the fenders vs a stock ranger......
"Available in 80" and 86" track widths"

stock ranger is 58.6" track width
Sure is wicked looking!! they have 2014 raptor kit and 2017 raptor kit, 6" bulge 3" rise over stock

In the pics on Mcneil fiberwerx websites I am seeing what looks to be full width 9" rear end and 37" tires

Talk about taking a ranger to the next level!
