Did the 1997 rangers have PATS? There's a truck on Craigslist for $400, he can't find the key and the steering wheel is locked. 4.0 5 speed extended cab 2wd, green (first thought of you, JAMMAN). He has the title. Vehicle may or may not run, possible blown head gasket. I need to know if I buy an ignition cylinder and just plop it in will it work or does it need to be programmed? Truck is 2 hours from me so I can't just run out there quick and take a look and the owner is an elderly man who thought it was a f150. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes I did, it's rough but it's going to be the beater truck/to and from work truck. Definitely needs head gaskets, there's water pouring out of the exhaust and the oil is milky. Luckily my boss (got a new job, working in a mechanic shop now) is going to let me park it and work on it here as I go. Also, got the ignition cylinder swapped, got the new ignition for it.

I'll get some pictures tomorrow, I HAD to clean up the inside today. Pretty gross, better but not even close. Not gonna worry about the outside, just mechanical and inside.

Bad news. Pulled the heads, had them in the parts washer and on the passenger side it's cracked in the water jacket in 2 places. On the search for head(s) now, so if anyone has some I can buy in the near future feel free to PM me. It's a 1997 Ranger 4.0 OHV.

I have a set of a 2000, about 40,000 miles on them. I know it will work on a 98 and 99 not sure about 97. Shipping to texas might be a hoot.

I'll do some research and see what happens. I know there were changes in the engine but not sure what that was. If you want, PM me a ball park price. This isn't a “I'll order them today” thing, more like in a week or so. Spent the budget on the truck already, didn't plan for heads to be bad so I expected to be driving my the end of the week.

There should be a casting number between the cylinders. If you wouldn't mind getting that and let me know what it is, please sir

On the heads? The heads are off. They are not the original heads either, the dude I bought it from replaced them before he sold it. It was that extended cab green one I owned. A head gasket started leaking water into a cylinder, when I took it apart it was just the gasket. I had only put 40K or so on the truck, all the bolts came right out all exhaust bolts everything. Nothing broke. I went over the head in the area the gasket popped in with a 50X loupe and saw nothing unusual. Heads look barely used.

What I did see were massive gaps in the rings and at least .01 between the cylinder walls and pistons... that's when I found the 99 4.0 in west virginia and took a road trip. It's all documented on here somewhere. I kept the heads because I saw nothing wrong with them.

You might want to check out what new ones would cost, might be just a little more than the shipping on these LOL.

I found this on a ford truck forum complete with misspelling:

"The heads on the 97' 4.0L OHV Part #s are AC268C1, and AC268C, as for the 00' 4.0L ohv the part #s are AC268C1 and AC268C so aparently they have the same heads on them."

New/reman heads are almost all 750+ for both, plus shipping. Finding used ones are nearly impossible/same condition I have. Maybe there's a way to fix mine, I'll continue to look for solutions

Remind me, I'm old. I'll pull them out and snap a picture of them for you. I'm not going to use them.
