4.0L OHV and SOHC actually use the same block
A 5r55e from a Ranger OHV will bolt to a SOHC and vise versa. All 4.0L use the same transmissions as the SOHC trucks.
The differences are:
83-85 C5 automatic
86-94 = A4LD
95-96 4r55e
97+ 5r55e
The 4r55e and 5r55e are very similar transmissions, they are both 4 speeds with the 5r using a computer controlled "simulated" second gear. The computer uses first gear and overdrive to create a "false" second gear. So if you bolt a 5r55e into a 95 or 96 it will act like a 4 speed.
The 5r55e from 97+ will bolt up to a 4.0L pushrod or overhead cam, same bellhousing, same flywheel, etc. In 98 the OHV and SOHC received a 8 bolt crankshaft so the flexplate changes (90-97 OHV 6 bolt, 98+ OHV and SOHc = 8 bolt)
97 5r55e uses analog DTRS
98+ uses digital DTRS
I think it is 2001 or 2002 when they added a second speed sensor to the auto trans tailhousing, there is a OSS sensor on the back of the trans. If you install a 02-11 trans into an earlier truck without the sensor, just ignore it.
When changing transmissions with different years you need to confirm the DTRS and wiring is the same to all sensors and solenoids BEFORE you turn your old trans in for a core. I have seen that quite a few times.
Otherwise yes a 5r55e from a 4.0L will bolt to another 4.0 OHV or SOHC they both use the same bellhousing.
I am sure there are a ton of things I missed but that is the basics to know when trying to swap them around
