 The seat belts on every ranger I had owned previously were a pain to get retracted. I can't count how many dents I have where the doors meet from getting out quickly and shutting the door on the seat belt buckle because it just sits there until you jerk it a couple times and feed it in to the slot.

Jump forward to my latest truck known as the pumpkin. You un clip the seat belt and it instantly gets sucked in by what seems to be a rather sufficient spring.

Now I get curious because this is the way it is supposed to be. I want this for the rest of my trucks. Has anyone replaced the retract spring or is it just a dirty pulley or what is going on with a MAJORITY of them that do not retract properly?

 My 2008 has fairly good belt retraction, maybe try taking that piece of trim off that covers the belt mechanism and see if you think that mechanism is replaceable? I'm sure it is, finding it is going to be a royal pain though I'm sure. Maybe new model years have a different, better design on that?

 My 2000 I have to give the seat belt a couple tugs to get it to retract. My other 2000 IIRC was the same way, I never gave it any thought.

 I have the problem in my '03 but it only take a slight pull and it lets go and retracts.

I'm thinking it is the auto release mechanism, which activates when the brakes are applied, needs a cleaning and maybe a little oiling !

I have been putting off taking it apart to see if a cleaning and oiling will help, it helps on so many other parts of the Ranger.

 Well I'm pulling the one off the truck in the garage that is going bye bye, it seems to be OK but it was owned by a bone thin old lady. I'm thinking pulling it all the way out like mos of us have to weakens the spring. I will eventually pull it apart and see whats inside, maybe it can be twisted a couple more times.

 Mine have been weak since day one of ownership.  The passenger belt ALWAYS traps my wife and it won't let her lean forward.  She has to take it off, retract it all the way, then put it back on.  She hates my truck...

 OK that is unusual. They have a mechanism in them that when they feel more than like XG forward they lock. Yours is clearly over reactive. Or you have solid shocks and live on a dirt road.

 For once I did what I said, I removed the seat belt before taking the truck to the JY today. I noticed right off the bat it it sensitive to tilting. It locks when you put it about 45 degrees in any direction. I'll take it apart and take some pictures of what I discover.

 Looks like you have to literally destroy it to get it apart, a lot of plastic staking or sonic welding. Since this one works so well I'll exchange with mine and destroy the one I remove.

I did notice at the end of the retract you can wind the spring tighter, I went like 6 turns and didn't hear anything break so there is hope. Basically remove the plastic covers, pull the seat belt all the way out, hold the rotational position with vise grips, push the pin out that holds the belt, wind it as far as it will safely go (keep an eye on the torsion spring) and re insert the belt/pin. Even if the spring were to break any G force 360 degrees will lock the belt. I can't wait to see inside!
