I'm thinking of upgrading the radio in my 98 Ranger since I've got a 2019 Jeep as my daily driver I've enjoyed the touchscreen radio. I wasn't aware you could add it to the Ranger or maybe it's too much trouble. I watched some videos of owner's adding bluetooth, dvd, carplay compatible radios in Rangers. It appears out of every one I've watched they had to cut the radio bezel. Is there any brand of radio that will fit without having to cut anything? If I can I want it to have dvd/cd/navigation/radio features. I see some that even come with back up cameras which I've got on my Jeep but not necessary on a Ranger. How complicated is it compared to installing just an aftermarket cd player? I did that years ago but have switched back to factory radio once that one failed. It also doesn't have to be the most expensive or fanciest one since it's a work truck but it gets driven a lot. I'm wondering if these knock off brands on ebay will work? I've got the factory Premium 80-watt radio in there now that works great although mine was originally a standard am/fm/cassette so there's no amplifier. I don't think there even was an amp on a 98 anyway but even the speakers are factory.

First off, with a slight modification, you can use any Double Din (DD) Radio in a Ranger.
The Ranger has a different sized Radio and make using both a single and double din radio extra work but cheer up it's easy to put in a DD radio.
Read up on the DD How-To and see wha to do.

As far as choices, that up to you, make sure you can get a wiring adapter for your truck... AND when you buy the Radio ask about an exact fit adapter harness then it will be a plug and play.
I have an '03 EDGE Std Cab, I got the iLX-207 Alpine Double Din Radio, got a back up camera, and SirusXM Receiver, a  wiring adapter, and a Mounting Adapter...  it all fit without doing anything extra...EXCEPT opening up the Radio/HVAC Bezel, top and bottom.
Pick your Radio, modify the Radio Bezel, mount it up !

I just ordered one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B3TX6MF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

to install in my 88 Bronco II
The old double din DVD player is great but it does not have bluetooth so it was time to upgrade. Basically what I bought is a stereo/head unit that has bluetooth, radio stations, google maps, front and rear camera inputs and more........plus it is a touchscreen android tablet so it will run apps like torque pro (I can check codes and do diagnostics right from the stereo)
The price it right since it includes the GPS antennae. I did have to buy a separate rear camera for another $20
You will find this is a very popular upgrade these days to get rid of the old cd/dvd player and go all digital with a touchscreen.
The whole thing will be here tomorrow and I will install later this week
This can easily be made to fit a 98-11 Ranger

A lot of the newer Head Unit do not have the mechanicals as the older units, no DVD but they do add the Apps features and in turn all of the stuff 410 mentioned, necessary in todays world.

I too recently purchased a head Unit without the DVD, it is a DD and fit perfectly in my '03 Dash with slight trimming of the Bezel on the top and bottom edges.
You can buy a separate DVD Player if you want, I have been looking but they are a little pricy !

There is a How-To on one of the other Ranger Sites, check it out an see how easy it will be to do the project.

As long as it is Double Din it should work with the mod.

Apple or android head unit? Pumpkin makes a nice 7inch android head unit.

Jamie,

The aftermarket Cameras I have dealt with aren't as good as the OEM Stuff.

Mine, touted as one of the best, isn't half of what my Wife's Honda has, I don't mean even the backward directions bars, but just the quality of the picture and the way it positions the bars.

If yours looks good, please post a picture, I might look into changing mine.

Good Luck with the install.

I've had my eye on the Atoto's for a while too. Thought about using the camera input(s) for rock cams or something. Generally reviews for the atoto backup cam are ok but you could also buy a "high end" aftermarket cam and use that.

Allright I will keep you posted.
I have installed about 20 rear view cameras for customers and for ourselves
Picture quality was never an issue with the gear I install??
In fact many factory reverse cameras are the ones that need upgrading!
The FJ cruiser, Excursion and my BII will all have the same camera in them after this

The camera I bought was not included with the head unit, it was $20 amazon and separate

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074P45P7G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I like these small bullet style ones, easier to install and hide.
No LED lights needed for "night vision" as my reverse lights are already pretty dang bright  (LED fog) and the camera can see pretty well even at night

That is about 4x less than I paid for the one I have... it is suppose to be HD, picture quality should be over the top.

Maybe I need to do some adjusting.

My biggest problem is the distance behind the truck, it isn't as far out as I think it should be.

I still haven't found the perfect unit with the features I want. I want the DVD player, Bluetooth, and built in navigation. Back up camera isn't necessary since I've got a regular cab. Doesn't even have to be a name brand. The retail stores selections suck and double prices on eBay. There's so many choices to go through on eBay. That's where I usually buy.

Have you checked Crutchfields or other On-Line Store like that ?

Crutchfield includes a lot of extras for free... like an installed kit and the radio side wiring adapter... !

I have used Sonic Electronic also.

Just got an e-mail from Sonic Electronic, 30% off some units.

https://www.sonicelectronix.com/lp/brands-sale?utm_source=sendinblue&utm_campaign=memorial_day_sale_523&utm_medium=email

They might have something you want.

Sometimes I find what I want on one of these sites and then look else where for the best price !

I never have found the one I want. I started to have more serious problems that I'm trying to work out on this Ranger. If I can ever get it properly running right I'm going to go with just a cheap bluetooth radio so I can play my downloaded music from my phone. I was also debating an OEM radio w/ the Bluetooth upgrade.

If you have a cassette player version you can spend $20 on an old CD player adapter which is a cassette with a cable for a headphone jack. You slip the cassette in and put the headphone jack in your phone ( assuming it's not an iphone) and everything comes over the speakers calls and all. It also turns your phone into a pre-amp. I used this set up for a long time

I thought about trying that. I do have an Iphone although it's an old one. I'm planning on upgrading it soon since in my new Jeep it has Apple Carplay. I talked to a few people I know about the plug in adapter for the cassette and they said it works but not very good. Even the one that plugs into the aux plug they said wasn't very high quality. That's why I was initially looking for the radio

For $20 you will not get a Bose or Harmon and Carver sounding system but if you listen to pop or rock and like the volume up it sounds great. I used this for 6 plus years and in 2 rangers. The only issue I ever had was occasionally after a call I would need to do a hard reset so others could hear me on my phone. Its $20, a very reasonable experiment.

Pioneer has a head unit for apple play and Pumpkin is a good unit for android.

I think whether you go with a 6ish or 7inch screen size you will still need to modify the bezel by either filling the sides or trimming with a dremel.

More people are going with apple or android tablets and I've seen a couple nice installs. They make your radio opening a cubby and have a arm come out and attach to the back of the tablet. It's pretty slick, but you mentioned you intend to use CDs....

I had one of these in my truck forever - this new one looks like it has apple car play which is awesome. Heads up - you have to wire a 12V signal to get the tv to work. This is so you can only watch it while the car is in park. I wired it to my running lights so I could drive around and watch star wars
