Lol. Both my 99 and my 07 rangers coolant always seemed to evaporate. Overflow is always empty and they have never overheated. They never puke coolant on to the ground either. The 99 is gone but the 07 does the same thing. I just assumed it was a ranger thing.

In preparation for winter I picked up some 50/50 and filled up the radiator and the overflow to the correct line. The next time I drove it, when I parked it had a LITTLE steam wafting from under the hood that smelled like antifreeze nothing major and not billowing clouds. The first time I figured it was from spillage when I filled it up. It did it again today. The coolant steam seems to be in the vicinity of the driverside by the cylinder head and exhaust towards the firewall. I dont have oil in my coolant or coolant in my oil so I'm confident it's not major. I'm thinking it's a intake gasket or a freeze plug. I'm not a mechanic so itd be nice to hear what others think till I can get it to my mechanic. Monday it's going to the dealer for the passenger side airbag recall then I'll drop it off to my mechanic. Anyone have this issue as well?

100% percent chance the thermostat housing is cracked. It's a problem that plagues the 4.0 SOHC Rangers and Mustangs. When you change the housing do yourself a huge favor and change the bypass hose on the bottom of the thermostat housing. New housing is like $70 from Ford part store and Amazon housings aren't worth the money. The new housing comes with a new thermostat so it's like killing 2 birds with 1 stone

You can also choose from a couple different designs of metal housing. A Google search will find one easily.

Here's an excellent thread on the subject over at Explorer Forum: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/4-0-sohc-metal-thermostat-housing-comparison.472522/

DAMMIT!!! You are 100% correct. $400 later....I have more money than time at the moment.

Probably could have ignored it and made do till my engine swap but I didnt want to chance it even though it's probably been this way for over a year. Probably happened when i changed the thermostat as part of my new vehicle maintenance.

When I buy a new vehicle l get all the maintenance up to date. Fluids etc....so I have a good base to maintain everything. It's expensive but oz of prevention is worth a pounds of dealership service dept repairs. It also minimizes bigger surprise fixes.

Only time that has backfired on me was when I used radiator flush on my 87 bronco II. The gunk plugged the water galleys. It overheated and cracked both heads. I'll never flush a radiator through the engine again.

Thank you black06xlt for your 100% correct prognosis.

I've considered designing one that actually works. Even the aftermarket metal ones seem to have issues. They copied the structure of the plastic one and simply used aluminum. It was a bad design out of the box.

It comes with a 2 year warranty and the new thermostat. Why should I replace the other hose? They are doing it tomorrow so I can have them add it if you think I should. I'm swapping out the SOHC V6 with a 5.0L V8 next August.

You dont have to replace it. It's just the best time to replace it since you have to remove the thermostat housing to change the hose. Why pay the same labor bill twice? That's the only reason I recommended changing the bypass hose. It's like $10 for a new one

Appreciate the info. I'll add it if it's not much more.

I called up this morning to see about adding the hose. The hose cost $50+ and a half hour labor. Total came to almost another $200 so I passed. It's back in the driveway with new thermostat, housing, and coolant.

That was a ford dealership. It was in for airbag recall and I noticed the coolant issue the day before I dropped it off. It was a matter of convenience. My mechanic would be a lot less but the truck was already at ford.

If I did your job for a living I'd probably either snuck it in on the clock. Lol. Or had all my tools needed in a bucket in the bed so when I got home itd be on in jiffy. I dont do enough mechanical stuff at home yet. I'm still trying to clean up after the remodel. Hard to put stuff away till I know I'm finished for good. I hope to eventually use the garage for truck stuff.... eventually. Lol.

My home remodel has been a 5 year process starting with the outside and moving to the inside. And I'm still cleaning stuff up from that. Wife came to a few weeks ago and says I want to repaint the livingroom. I said dear we just gutted and put everything new in the livingroom 11 months ago!  She says yeah I know but I dont like the color. So we went from antique white to white and put crown molding up. So it's never done

Not all of them are a "direct copy" of the plastic one....

The housing from SimmonsAutoSportz is a one-piece design. It does use different style sensors that clip in instead of threading in. They have several different options actually. For various years of the 4.0 SOHC. Two pages worth..

A great discussion with the designer/builder and users here: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/metal-thermostat-housing-soon-available-for-v6-2005-engine.362922/

OK we need some F-R exclusive designs for "stuff" that we could market. It's been a year and I have heard a lot of people wanting things... brackets... adapters.

I know this thread is hijacked now (sorry).

I'm not in it to make a bunch of money but would really like to supply the Ranger community with things they could use on a mass basis. I can't justify making a cope and drag for 10 pieces. Maybe 50.

License plate holders, gear shift knobs, fender protectors to keep from scratching out trucks, Tshirts, hoodies, trucker caps, wool caps, lighters, decals, bumper stickers, antenna balls, beer cozy, coffee cup, fuzzy dice, air fresheners, . Pop into a truck stop and look through the cheap automotive section. Basically anything you can put the logo on will sell, or be a nice giveaway prize. Better get the store up before Thanksgiving. You could clean up with Christmas coming. That could make your whole year!!!

I really want new license plate holders if you couldnt tell. The ones I have are from the dealership I bought my truck from and I'd much rather promote this place.
