Neighbor has an 01 4.0 sohc. Loosing coolant, green coolant around that thermostat housing. Is it usually the thermostat housing itself? Looks like it is seeping through the seals.

Looks like they made the thing out of plastic.

The SOHC did make more HP but after staring at this one for a half hour or so I wouldn't trade my OHV for one. These little push rod 4.0's are so sturdy though I can't explain the timing chain tensioner LOL. At least there is only one chain and it is smaller by far.

The whole housing is plastic, held in place with 3 long bolts to the aluminum intake
They are a real PITA and fragile
there are O rings in there that dry up
I believe in 04 the design improved and its possible to use the later model housing
Also I am not 100% on this but heard rumor of a aluminum replacement housing??
Research may be a good idea here

I have a plastic one now. I bought an aluminum one from Ebay but swapped it out for the plastic one. I ordered mine from Ford.

Yes metal!!! Wooo hoooo nice. Thanks fellas now I know where to go. I try to avoid SOHC engines but they always seem to find me needing some sort of tensioner or chain work and the first thing that has to move is the dang thermo housing
