Today I was changing the spark plugs in my Ranger & found the plastic cover on the harness that goes down to the crank sensor melted against the exhaust manifold. I stripped back the melted plastic cover to find this. One of the wires has about a 1/2" section of the wire bare, the second wire appears ok, & the third one is completely bare as far as I remove the plastic cover. I removed the plastic cover the rest of the way to the sensor plug connector & there are only 2 wires coming out of the plug & the bare wire stops about 2" short of the sensor plug, & the sensor plug shows no signs of being melted. I have no idea what the bare wire is. I also checked on Rock Auto for this sensor plug & it is only 2 wires. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 2000 with a 4.0 that could check the wires going to the crank sensor?. I am going to tape up the 1/2" section that is bare & see if the truck starts.

I taped up the 1/2" bare section of the blue wire & routed the wire away from the exhaust manifold, & put everything back together & it started right up. Tomorrow I will take it for a ride, & Monday is the real test when I drive it on the highway.

I have a diagram and a full harness from a 4.0 but from a 99. I was going to throw it away.
On my way to Walmart, when I get back I'll check in.

Thanks Jim for the pics, on my 2000 the plug that plugs into the sensor is a 2 wire plug also, with a blue & a gray wire coming out of the plug, plus the bare wire. I found a ignition wiring diagram on line that shows a ground wire that comes off the shielding that covers the two wires that come from crank sensor. Here is a link to the diagram, it is the first diagram.

Makes sense, it would have to be shielded being a magnetic pickup.

I looked for an hour and I cannot find my 2000 electrical diagrams but I assure you I do have one. Somewhere. I'm in the middle of moving also so things are somewhat in a disarray at the moment.

On the machines I used to build, any type of sensor that was shielded the ground wire only attached at one end and was open on the other. There is even a fancy name for what happens if you ground it at both which of course I have forgotten.

UPDATE: OK after repairing the the bare section of the wire to the crank sensor I drove it yesterday & it ran fine around town. This morning I drove it to work on the highway at 65 MPH & drove it home this afternoon 65-70 MPH right about the speed when it was acting up & all seemed fine today.
