While enduring a driveshaft conversion on a 5.0 Ranger, I learned a lot about U-joints.
Thanks to a company called Neapco we have options on conversion joints.
I started with a stock ranger driveshaft, 2WD, automatic. The 4R70W I put in turns out to be within 1/2" of the original transmission but the yoke was splined smaller and will not fit the 4r70w.
I had 2 4r70w yokes, one I bought on e-bay for the application and one from a crown vic thanks to black06xlt on this forum. Both fit the spline in the transmission just fine.
The e-bay yoke was an exact match for the Ranger U-joint, but the outside diameter was only 1.500 and was sloppy in the trans bushing. The Crown Vic fit snugly on both but has larger diameter U joints.
I quickly learned the terms OSR and ISR and lock-up, which is explained in the attached PDF.
The ranger shaft had 1.063 diameter cups and a lock up of 3.622 (I measured 3.615 but was squeezing, 3.622 seems to be the standard) and the crown vic yoke needed 1.187 diameter cups with a 3.622 lock up. There was a perfect conversion joint, the Neapco 2-3050 that I can just press in and it will work.
So my driveshaft was a little more complicated than I first thought but less complicated (and less expensive) than having it cut and balanced.
