I know I know everyone has beat the “pats” horse to death on swapping v8's into rangers but I haven't seen a answer to my question. Yes I've read a lot of posts on the ranger station and the two threads on here.

Can a 1996 non pats computer work with the 2002 factory wiring still in place? Can the wiring be removed? I'm not concerned about having pats. But if it is easier to wire in pats I'm also not against that either.

I do have a 2000 expo 5.0 ecm and all the pats stuff to go with it. With using the 2000 ecm I would have to repin some tranny harness and some other stuff.

What's everyone's thoughts?

The "2002" part is what worries me. Yes you can swap every wire and make it happen, but I don't even think the pre 2001 pats module, key ring or anything else is a plug in for the 2002.

I bet with enough looking you could find a 2000 ECM that has been flashed already or go poke the bees nest at https://eectuning.org/forums/ (ignore the security warnings I think they host it in their basement) 'cause there are several people there capable of deleting pats.

I think people go through a lot of trouble to make a 2001 forward ranger work with a 5.0 when it would be so much easier to start with a 98~2000 which are cheap, plentiful and you can find them in great shape still PLUS a lot of info on swapping the 5.0 without having to be a rocket scientist.

I have a 2000 ecm, the ring around the ignition, one factory expo key and tumbler and pats box from behind the air bag. I plan on getting a custom tune so pats can be removed just curious if the 1996 was going to work since it came factory no pats unlike my ranger. I would love to find a 1998 ranger but my 2002 is special since it's my first truck. I am curious to what other people have done with a 2001 up ranger on making thing start and run fine.

Also, I'm basically asking everyone to explain to some bum steamfitter why a 96 non pats couldn't be used with the factory ranger stuff or if I could remove the factory ranger pats stuff

You can use the 96 computer or the 2000 computer

The 96 computer is expecting to see a 5 wire MAS air flow sensor, a 3 wire cam position sensor and the internal EGR system along with an analog signal from the DTRS and a tailhousing mounted VSS

The 2000 computer is expecting to see a 7 wire MAS, a 2 wire CPS and a digital signal from the DTRS. the VSS signal comes from the rear 8.8

The wiring changes are very slight between these two years, the wiring at the 42 pin connector at the back of the engine bay is basically standardized. You can install a V8 from 96 or 2000 and still keep your 2002 wiring. The instrument cluster might need some small changes.

If your 5.0 donor is a 2000 I would keep the 2000 stuff
because it is more backwards compatible with your 2002. Your 02 ranger is returnless fuel and uses the digital instrument cluster already.

I would just install the 2000 pats stuff into my 2002 ranger and forget about trying to source a 96 PCM and making the wiring changes to the 2000 harness to accommodate the 96 computer (I have a box full of the 96-97.5 PCM if you decide you need one)

Well I have a complete 96 expo under hood wiring harness from the donor.... lol. I found at my local junk yard a 2000 pcm along with all the pats stuff. No wiring harnesses tho.  For the MAF I do plan on changing it over to a SCT big air model which I don't know yet if it has inturnal temp sensor, EGR will be removed from the computer when i get it tuned. As for the speedo I also got a GEM from a 2000 2.5l ranger to wire.

By from what people have said it'd probably be easier to pull a 2000 harness.

Why? If your entire donor is a 96 I would run that!
The computer is already setup to talk to the engine and transmission, the interface to the truck is just for the water and oil sensors really. Use the ones from your old engine.....

The 96 trans will like that 96 PCM
Your 2002 gets the speedo signal from the rear axle/abs module, all of this can stay with the truck. The 96 vss will get hooked up to the pcm to make it happy

You can run the 96 engine using a returnless fuel rail and injectors and keep your 02 fuel system

I would just run the 96 drivetrain, making it adapt to your 02 truck is not any different then any other ranger conversion except you need a returnless 5.0 fuel rail and injectors...otherwise keep it all 96!
The 96-97.5 computer is VERY friendly to tuning/power mods, etc

Earlier I was thinking your donor was a 2000, since you have the complete 96 USE THAT!!

That solves that then! Sorry for the confusion on which pcm/wiring harness was which lol!! I'm just glad the will work with the pats stuff still in it. As for the fuel rails I was just gona run another line and leave it return style
