You can use the 96 computer or the 2000 computer The 96 computer is expecting to see a 5 wire MAS air flow sensor, a 3 wire cam position sensor and the internal EGR system along with an analog signal from the DTRS and a tailhousing mounted VSS The 2000 computer is expecting to see a 7 wire MAS, a 2 wire CPS and a digital signal from the DTRS. the VSS signal comes from the rear 8.8 The wiring changes are very slight between these two years, the wiring at the 42 pin connector at the back of the engine bay is basically standardized. You can install a V8 from 96 or 2000 and still keep your 2002 wiring. The instrument cluster might need some small changes. If your 5.0 donor is a 2000 I would keep the 2000 stuff because it is more backwards compatible with your 2002. Your 02 ranger is returnless fuel and uses the digital instrument cluster already. I would just install the 2000 pats stuff into my 2002 ranger and forget about trying to source a 96 PCM and making the wiring changes to the 2000 harness to accommodate the 96 computer (I have a box full of the 96-97.5 PCM if you decide you need one)
