I just bought a 4.0 pushrod used.

The main reason I have it is it was bought for a first gen ranger born with a 2.8 and feel silly in a search learned there was a 2.9 also so I have some history catching up to do, calling myself a Ranger fanatic.

The 2.8 was mated with a manual transmission, 4WD.

I was shown the 2.8 and flywheel which had 6 holes/bolts to the crank.

The 4.0 pushrod has 8.

Curious, is there an adapter? He felt the 4.0 would bolt to the transmission being he didn't have to move the engine stand arms and had both engines on the stand. While I was there we took the 4.0 off and put the 2.8 back on and it did seem to line up.

So the curious question is (and if I figure it out before it is answered I will post it) does a pushrod 4.0 bellhousing have the same bolt pattern as a 2.8?

Is there some kind of adapter to bolt a 2.8 flywheel on a 4.0, is it WISE because of balance issues, OR is there a flywheel you can buy that bolts to the 4.0 crank and be used in the 2.8 standard transmission? AND is that wise because of the torque of the 4.0 VS the primitive 2.8?

Man that 2.8 looks like a turd from a design standpoint.

If memory is correct the 2.8 2.9 and 4.0 all different engines. Them 2.9's paired with a set dart iron eagle heads and a 5 speed would run forever. Just don't do a cat and muffler delete.  Little burgers can make some noise

nope..................
The 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 2.9 and ohv 4.0 and sohc 4.0 are all the same cologne 60 degree v6 engine, these come from the Merkur family of engines.
Ford (of Cologne Germany) cast iron block 60 degree v6 family of engines
These were CAR ENGINES put into mini trucks in an answer to teh gas crunch and the toyota and nissan mini trucks coming to America
The 2.6L was in couriers before the 83 Ranger debut, so we never really saw these engines.

In 83 the ranger had the 2.8L 60 degree cologne v6, carbuerated engine. Auto transmission was the C3/c4/c5 automatic (from the pinto)
Manual transmissions were the mitsubishi, toyo kogo and mazda 5 speeds. The early 4-5 speeds there were 3 of them in our trucks, before 1989 you could end up with any of them. After 1989 they are all mazda 5 speed M5OD
1986 the 2.9L replaced the 2.8 and was EFI with speed density and TFI ignition
1990 was the last year of the 2.9L, there was even a mass air flow version in 89-90 Rangers and BII's, mostly in California.
1989 the 2.9L was bored and stroked became the beloved pushrod 4.0. The 4.0 pushrod was used from 1989-2001 in Rangers and Explorers

Yes the 2.8L and 2.9L only had 6 bell housing bolts.... but it is the same block and bell housing bolt pattern as the 4.0
The transmissions ARE INDEED inter-change-able
6 bolts will hold them together
I would not run any transmission from a 2.8 or 2.9L in a 4.0, tooooooo weak
However 4.0 transmissions the A4LD and M5OD are good replacements for the earlier engines, 2.8 and 2.9
In my opinion the 2.8 and 2.9 NEVER should have been put into the heavier trucks like the 4x4 ranger and Bronco II. They are car engines, rev happy to 6800 rpm and do not make enough torque for a truck. The single best upgrade any 2.8, 2.9L truck can have is to swap out to a pushrod 4.0

In 1997 Ford released the SOHC 4.0L whoops.
The 97-99 versions of the sohc engine were crappy crappy crappy due to nylon timing chain guides and hydraulic chain tensioners.
The SOHC is STILL a Cologne 60 degree v6 and still has same block as a ohv 4.0 pushrod...its just been modified to use cams over the valves........

So in short all 2.6, 2.9, 2.9, 4.0 ohv and 4.0 sohc use the same bell housing and the transmissions will bolt up to any of these engines with the correct combination of parts
98-01 4.0L have an 8 bolt crankshaft/flywhee/flexplate
All 1983-1997 engines before had a 6 bolt crank
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Cologne_V6_engine
Auto transmissions went like this, c3 auto from the pinto was used in 83-85 rangers/BII called the C4 auto in rwd and c5 auto in 4wd trucks.
In 1986 an aluminum overdrive drum was added and the C4 auto became the A4LD
The A4LD eventually turned into the 4r44e used in 95+ trucks and then computer controlled 4r44e with computer created second gear was redubbed the 5r55e. The 5r55e uses 1st gear and overdrive to create a "false" second gear.

To answer your questions directly:

The 2.8L was a TURD
Only Ford Cosworth made anything cool from the old 2.8 and 2.9L engines, some of the Cosworth 24V OHC 2.9 engines made over 350hp!!!!! But again at high rpm, not really good in a truck.
2.8L and 2.9L engines in my shop become boat anchors
Only the pushrod 4.0 will make it under the hood.

However you can bolt 4.0 transmissions to a 2.8 or 2.9L if you wish.....they will bolt up, no special adapters or parts needed.

Fun facts from 25 years of ranger wrenching:

Now the real gem here is the c5 auto, as you may know the c4 auto can be built up to do anything! They are wicked cool transmissions if you can live without overdrive. The C5 auto was only used in 4x4 rangers and BII from 83-85, the c5 means it has a 4x4 tailhousing. These are getting pretty rare! a C5 tailhousing can fetch gooooood money. Lots of desert racing trucks running in the v6 class will have a displacement limit of 4.0 liters and since the A4LD and 5r55e family of transmissions are so plagued with issues alot of these high horsepower trucks wish to run the old c4 auto or mazda 5 speed, any 4wd dudes will need that c5 tailhousing to make this happen

You will find many 4.0 race trucks are running a SOHC 4.0 engine (many of them with a modified 2.8 Cosworth intake and CARB!!!) and C4 automatic transmission.......that combo can make 350+ HP and with a manual valve body built to the hilt c4 automatic to put the power to the ground.......

Back in the day (like 1994-98) when the internet was new there was a website called Fordrangers.com and a little owners forum had a section called "Kunz Korner" for making power from these v6's. There was a dude names Sven Pruett that knew all about these engines he literally wrote the book, you can still find copies of that book:
https://www.amazon.com/Degrees-Engines-Motorbooks-International-Powerpro/dp/0879389141

The website was shut down by Ford for trademark issues, we all moved on  and TRS and the Explorerforum were born........

Good memories from that place, started all of this craziness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of you may remember that website, I still have screen shots of it on my PC :)

Great info Jamie extremely happy and are going to pin this one.

That answers several other questions about the interchangeability of our little motors per the year.

I'm waiting for the Ford police to contact me on my name, if they do I'm going to fight hard for a buyout LOL.

I'm confused....does your name mean something to Ford....? I always thought it was kind of a play on to “The Man”....get it? “JAMMAN”

I simply cannot tell anyone the history of my moniker. It would come back to haunt me.

I have been using that since 98 on every forum I visit. If it has been taken I use JAMMANICA. when that happens I am usually both by accident.

In about 2000 it worked out because everyone that knew me knew I played guitar, JAMMAN fit and nobody had to know the beginning.

No it wasn't illegal or dirty, just in the past.
