nope..................
The 1.8, 2.0, 2.3, 2.4, 2.6, 2.8, 2.9 and ohv 4.0 and sohc 4.0 are all the same cologne 60 degree v6 engine, these come from the Merkur family of engines.
Ford (of Cologne Germany) cast iron block 60 degree v6 family of engines
These were CAR ENGINES put into mini trucks in an answer to teh gas crunch and the toyota and nissan mini trucks coming to America
The 2.6L was in couriers before the 83 Ranger debut, so we never really saw these engines.
In 83 the ranger had the 2.8L 60 degree cologne v6, carbuerated engine. Auto transmission was the C3/c4/c5 automatic (from the pinto)
Manual transmissions were the mitsubishi, toyo kogo and mazda 5 speeds. The early 4-5 speeds there were 3 of them in our trucks, before 1989 you could end up with any of them. After 1989 they are all mazda 5 speed M5OD
1986 the 2.9L replaced the 2.8 and was EFI with speed density and TFI ignition
1990 was the last year of the 2.9L, there was even a mass air flow version in 89-90 Rangers and BII's, mostly in California.
1989 the 2.9L was bored and stroked became the beloved pushrod 4.0. The 4.0 pushrod was used from 1989-2001 in Rangers and Explorers
Yes the 2.8L and 2.9L only had 6 bell housing bolts.... but it is the same block and bell housing bolt pattern as the 4.0
The transmissions ARE INDEED inter-change-able
6 bolts will hold them together
I would not run any transmission from a 2.8 or 2.9L in a 4.0, tooooooo weak
However 4.0 transmissions the A4LD and M5OD are good replacements for the earlier engines, 2.8 and 2.9
In my opinion the 2.8 and 2.9 NEVER should have been put into the heavier trucks like the 4x4 ranger and Bronco II. They are car engines, rev happy to 6800 rpm and do not make enough torque for a truck. The single best upgrade any 2.8, 2.9L truck can have is to swap out to a pushrod 4.0
In 1997 Ford released the SOHC 4.0L whoops.
The 97-99 versions of the sohc engine were crappy crappy crappy due to nylon timing chain guides and hydraulic chain tensioners.
The SOHC is STILL a Cologne 60 degree v6 and still has same block as a ohv 4.0 pushrod...its just been modified to use cams over the valves........
So in short all 2.6, 2.9, 2.9, 4.0 ohv and 4.0 sohc use the same bell housing and the transmissions will bolt up to any of these engines with the correct combination of parts
98-01 4.0L have an 8 bolt crankshaft/flywhee/flexplate
All 1983-1997 engines before had a 6 bolt crank

Auto transmissions went like this, c3 auto from the pinto was used in 83-85 rangers/BII called the C4 auto in rwd and c5 auto in 4wd trucks.
In 1986 an aluminum overdrive drum was added and the C4 auto became the A4LD
The A4LD eventually turned into the 4r44e used in 95+ trucks and then computer controlled 4r44e with computer created second gear was redubbed the 5r55e. The 5r55e uses 1st gear and overdrive to create a "false" second gear.
