Some of you know my projects but for those of you that don't I have (in order of purchase and reason):

1. 2000 Ranger, single cab short bed 2WD coil spring. 1997 5.0 from a mountaineer, 4R70W from a 2wd 96 expo, installed not finished.

Bought because it had a bad motor specifically to do a swap.

2. 2000 Ranger, extended cab 4 door, 4WD, 4.0 push rod. Engine developed a miss after 2 years, way over 200K miles.

Bought because I wanted a 4WD and it was in really good shape for the price and year. Ranger 1 took a back seat while doing small mods to this one being my daily driver.

3. 2000 Ranger, single cab short bed 4WD 3.0.

Stole this one, owner couldn't make it run right. Only 140,000 miles, decent shape, but it sat in my garage for half a year while I tried to figure out what was wrong. I love this one it is my daily driver now.

SO I have 3 trucks, only one runs, I am dying to do a V8 swap as a daily driver.

I might move this to the projects section depending on where it goes.

The one I love is #3, the short cab 4WD. Ultimately I would like to keep this one forever, put a 5.0 in it and enjoy it for the rest of the time I can drive. But it has an excellent running 3.0 that burns very little oil (no adding between changes). But I want a V8.

IF I decide to put a V8 in #3 it will have to be a well planned precise strike because of time and money factors.

Since the 3.0 currently in #3 it could feasibly run for 3 or 4 more years and #2 has motor problems (and I need it to give to my son when he starts driving next spring) has anyone put a 3.0 in a truck that has a 4.0? 2000 to 2000 sounds like it would be a wash but aside from the obvious "why" factor from the 3.0 haters has this been done?

Motor trans and all.

I have lost interest in #1 and even though the 5.0 ran great and now has new timing chain I don't know if I want to use it for #3 for reasons I will bring up later.

Just curious, but if you're not wanting to use the 5.0 for the #3 and you want to use a new 5.0, then maybe try to sell the refreshed 5.0 and the 3.0 (maybe) and the old 4.0 for a good replacement 4.0 for the #2, since all you'll need is the engine because you've got the rest of the drivetrain in the truck already, and get another donor 5.0 that you could build up for the swap? Wait...that would require you to pull the 3.0 out of your daily driver whilst waiting for the 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 to sell...hmmm....just curious, why don't you want to use the current 5.0 you have?

1983 Ranger, reluctantly taking apart. Donor/project vehicle.

1997 Ranger Ex Cab Manual 4.0 2wd, dead on arrival. Hopefully reviving for a daily driver.

1984 Ranger, currently in ≈861 pieces. She’s donating what’s salvageable.

I just would rather get an engine and transmission already together. Kinda bummed, the trans from the donor was perfectly ok. I didnt pull it because I needed a 2wd trans. So I bought a 2wd trans and spent like 400 to do it. Now I need a 4wd trans instead.

Weird twist of fate, the person I gave the donor shell to pulled the trans. Its sitting  next door has been for over 2 years but the filler tube is out I bet it is full of water.

I put 3.0 in the crusher OR they make a great large boat anchor, coffee table
No way would I swap a 4.0 pushrod truck to a 3.0
I would rather install a 4.0L SOHC and keep the pushrod 4.0 computer :)
Or find a good pushrod engine OR find out why the miss on your 4.0 and fix it!

More than a miss, burns a butt ton of oil even when it runs good. Like 2Q between oil changes.

Crappy thing, I had a good 4.0 a while ago, and had a chance to buy another good 4.0 for cheap. Both ships have sailed and now I need a 4.0.

I know that drill!
harder to find these days but Ebay has some
I will buy a whole truck just to get a 4.0 or heck a good 3.0 for that matter. Prices appear to be going up on our old Rangers and their parts which is good if you have a lot full of them, bad if you still need to fill your lot
