I put 31s on it, now when I go to take off it's as if something is winding upward and then suddenly stops.

I'd think it was a pinion  issue and it still may be but I thought I would ask if there is anything more common.

Didn't remember it doing this with the worn out slicks that I removed from the truck.

I'm gonna look this morning at universal joints and transmission mounts.

Unfamiliar with what I should be looking for

Thanks

Would need to hear it. How many miles does this thing have on it again?

Wait it says Dodge did you post on the right forum? :)

103 now, it's on my 98 ranger.

Really no noise, more of a thud, like springs wrapping and unloading

That could cover an entire array of things. I have a clunk in my new 2000. Ends up being a bad TCC solenoid in the transmission locking the torque converter up prematurely.

With that mileage (incredible BTW) you should be having no problems at all.

I thought about torque converter, seems like it has something to do with new tires though maybe

It's as if the springs are flexing

It could be referring from many places in the drive train. Get under and look for obvious first, if nothing pops out then we take other steps.

Crawl under the truck and give your drive shaft a twist back and forth to check for U joint slop. Then check for slop in the trans tail shaft by pushing the driveshaft toward the front and back of the truck. Visually inspect trans mount, pinion snubber, leaf springs, and shackles, and just for the heck of it check motor mounts. You can have a buddy watch the engine while you put it in drive and reverse while having the brake on give it a little gas and see if the engine moves. If still nothing pops out at you look at the underbody by the differential to see if it's been winding up as you say. Look for frame cracks etc. If none of that is bad its internal.

I did check these things and nothing stands out.

Not sure if now I should be looking at trans or diff.

Maybe a better desc would help but not sure what to say.

Doesn't seem to do it in reverse, if I ease into the gas  than I can sometimes get it to not do it but I've really gotta be easing.

Ok so I give it gas, the truck move instantly but there is a very perceptable thud coming from somewhere.

Going down the road and letting off the gas I.E. coasting and then giving it gas and I don't get any thud.

Seems to only be from dead stop as far as I am able to tell.

Truck has 103 and I don't know much history of it except it's never been in the salt.

Just a light coat of surface rust on frame

If I were to say that I have maybe 3-4 hundred pounds of cement blocks in my bed and the thud issue has disappeared would that help in figuring out or ruling out the issues?

No thud or clunk at all.
