Crawl under the truck and give your drive shaft a twist back and forth to check for U joint slop. Then check for slop in the trans tail shaft by pushing the driveshaft toward the front and back of the truck. Visually inspect trans mount, pinion snubber, leaf springs, and shackles, and just for the heck of it check motor mounts. You can have a buddy watch the engine while you put it in drive and reverse while having the brake on give it a little gas and see if the engine moves. If still nothing pops out at you look at the underbody by the differential to see if it's been winding up as you say. Look for frame cracks etc. If none of that is bad its internal.
