My youngest son has an interest in getting a preowned Ford Ranger and he still lives in Michigan so I am looking for something in the Detroit or Toledo areas.

I would prefer he gets a 4.0L and 4WD, Color isn't a big concern that I am aware of and if the price is right My son could become blind temporarily.
trying to keep him in the 95-02' range. Its his first vehicle so not looking for a driveway princess but it needs a sound motor and trans, reliable, straight body, minimal dents if possible, NON-smoked in vehicle... higher mileage is expected and wear and tear is too. The boy isn't that mechanically inclined so the reliability is a must for now so he learns some. Otherwise, Ill have to see about getting him a truck from out West here. I thought I'd start here first.

Show me whats available

I would look in your area as it would be less likely to have rust issues.

I'd like to, but he resides in Michigan still with his Mother, and there's no way she would let him fly out here and drive back, especially alone at 16, AND her and I mix like oil and water in Hell's kitchen fires.. My oldest son however. but him getting time off is another issue.

I'm trying to keep that card in my hand, but Im trying to keep him between $1800-2200. I've seen a few vehicles as described in that range worthy of looking at. if i have to bump $200 bucks and/or negotiate $200.. it is what it is

If you happen to find one within range of Columbus that qualifies I would be willing to go evaluate it for you. Of course no absolute guarantee of 100% accuracy but I have lived through many common ranger problems.

I'm local to the Toledo area, but don't personally know of anything on the market.  I would think your best bet would be to hit up craigslist. I've found all of my vehicles that way. Don't rule out the shady used car dealerships either. On rare occasions they have some some decent vehicles. You end up apying a premium for them though.

In the $2,000 and under price range with those options you'll probably be looking at a '93-97. Like Jim said, the rust is god awful up here, but clean trucks do pop up on occasion.

I'll second Jim's offer to check out a truck in my neck of the woods if you need it. Always willing to go look at rangers haha

Tony mentioned the rust but I would have if he hadn't covered it. Rust is pretty bad even down this far (I'm south of columbus) but I too have seen decent rangers here and have even bought a couple. To get something he doesn't have to work on right away he might have to wait and gather more money. There seems to be a severe class jump right around 3K

You can also check out cars.com, you enter the year, make, model of the vehicle you are looking for, how far from your area you want to look to, your zip code, & how much you want to spend up to & the hit the search button & they will find if there are any matches. L found the Ranger I have now at a dealer about 1 hour away from me.

Thanks guys,

The boys budget was a concern, hes going to need insurance and all the other excise tax BS, at 16 he's only learned to stand his ground with schoolmates and his Mother telling him to clean his room. He's not mentally nor physically equipped to deal with the hassles I've dealt with and mostly to be left alone about it so far more. So I didn't want the boys whole budget going into the vehicle and not leave anything left for him to use afterwards.

Also, I am amazed at how many Ford Rangers got the 18k gold I/P brace and supports. Seems a lot of Rangers NOT in the rust belt go for quite a bit less on this side of the world so this may be why I am shocked I can't find something as I stated from my original posting. Interesting... I could easily triple [or a bit more] a West coast truck back East on the selling block. crazy

Mike, I tried your suggestion.. my laptop started laughing at me and then shut down and restarted.

As I stated to the boys above. $2200-2500 is pretty average for a 95-2001'ish Ranger near me. 2WD or 4WD is a bit more of a crap shoot depending on the timing but. All the boy needs is 4WD, 4.0l, and a tow package which it should with those two options. Anything else can be added on and upfitted. He's into the camping and Kayaking thing so he will likely want to be able to go farther too find new activities, 4WD would get him there better. He does have some time so, something will Pop up.
