Never had projector head lights. But I do prefer LED over HID. The LED's have way less heat and last longer

Anthony @sheltonfilms did an entire thread on his projector install for his 2000.  https://ford-rangers.com/view_topic.php?id=274&forum_id=46&highlight=sheltonfilms

It's a personal choice, but I would do HID every time over LED.  The concept that LEDs don't generate heat is not true.  All you have to do is look at the heat sinks on LED headlight bulbs, complete with integrated fans, to know.  I had my headlights done, and since then I have done my fog lights myself.

But either way, I use http://www.theretrofitsource.com.  Good products, awesome support.

I have the parts for an HID Projector Upgrade... the LEDs aren't there yet or are just coming into their own as projectors.
If I were to buy the parts again, I would look harder at the LEDs.

Now I have heard but have never check it out, the '97 and older headlight are deeper than the newer style like my '03, and should lend themselves better to Projectors or any type.
