it has been suggested I install ECM chip
Hello, thank you for letting me chime in.
I have an 89 Bronco ll XLT with the 2.9 L V-6 and I am looking to eek out some more power with out a V-8 engine replacement.
It has been suggested I install ECM chip
also suggested is a rocker arm replacement from the 1.5 ratio to 1.8
also the exhaust is old and mostly shot, when I replace it do I move to away from the stock exhaust manifold and do headers? which I find need to be custom built. (Suggestion on sourcing please?)
She's got a 4 Speed Overdrive transmission. Recently rebuilt and new clutch. The heads were off 70K miles ago and the lower end was in perfect shape and it runs smooth, just gutless, stock.

I have never seen a 'chip' that will do anything other than lighten your wallet.  If you want to buy a tuner, and have an experienced tuner provide tunes, you can find gains there.  On an OBD1 vehicle, it would take some research.  Tuners like the SCT work well, but they are OBD2 compatible.

Have you considered the 4.0 V6? It is the big brother to your 2.9L and will motivate the Bronco II properly
Much cheaper and easier swap and you can keep your transmission if you want

Other than additional work, a V-8 is the way to go !

My '88 STX 4X Pickup, was ok with the 2.9L but I found my foot was on the floor boards more than not; just not enough power !
The 2.9L was drinking the gas like it was going out of style, the best I got after the lift and tires was around 14 mpg, after the 5.0L I was getting upward of 20 mpg... on the best day !
I converted to a 5.0L, stock, with auto, C4 but would like an AOD now, and the truck was a pleasure to drive, over powered yes but not a problem, OEM HP - 235.

On the V-6 side, what about a 4.0 OHV, I have heard it has more power than the 2.9L and should be a bolt in, same trans, not sure about the wiring, but I'm thinking the same mounts... almost a given !

Now back to the 2.9L, you could add higher ratio Rocker Arm, it should increase the low end torque and give you a little more kick in the pants feeling when taking off but it will run out of power, which the V-8 won't !
You could, if the engine is in good shape, replace the cam, new lifters and rockers, get something that has a good mid-range rpm power.
You can do a lot to an internal combustion engine, it just depends on how deep the pockets are... OR, ok I won't say it.

The 1st and 2nd gen Ranger/B-IIs didn't get the V-8 because Ford felt it would be a direct effect on the F-150 Sales, and their excuse was it had to meet Emissions over all their trucks,  and a power to eight restrictions, an OEM 302/5.0L in a Ranger it would be faster than most would like.

I know you want to get to a place with the 2.9L that will give you that feeling of power when you step on the accelerator, but no amount of work on an OEM 2.9L is going to compare to the 5.0L.

Good Luck, Stay Safe to all !

the 4.0 OHV is the perfect engine for a BII, I know I had one in my BII for 12+ years.

The 2.9L is a car engine, high revs.....not good in a Bronco

The 4.0 is a torque monster, torque down low where you need it.
Plenty of power for the little BII and it is the same block as a 2.9L so it uses the same transmissions
You can modify your 2.9L all day long, I did.....I spent lots of time and money on my 2.9L. I had accell /MSD 6a ignition, ported and polished intakes, cold air, headers and exhaust, that 2.9L would scream all the way up to 6800 RPM but still something was missing
Then I learned about the 4.0 and with some help converted my truck to the 4.0 with a 5 speed............ First time I let the clutch out on the 93 pushrod 4.0 .......I knew that 2.9L was a waste of time and belongs in a CAR

The V8 is of course better, they use half ton truck transmissions way more power and stronger..........but for MOST people the 4.0 is perfect for the BII. I went 302 because I wanted to stay with an auto trans and I was tired of trying to keep A4LD automatics together

4.0L pushrod was in production from 1989-2001 Ranger, Explorer, Aerostar and Mazda B4000 trucks
The 2.6L became the 2.8L carbed engine in 1984 with the ranger, later in 86 became the EFI 2.9L and finally in 1989 they bored and stroked it, did away with the crappy TFI ignition and distributor............ and the pushrod 4.0 was born.
We are BIG fans of the pushrod 4.0 around here.........
