can i start a subscription on someone else's unit or do i have to start with a new unit?
Yes. There is one of the stations you can go to (don't know which one) that shows you the ID of the radio. Providing it isn't stolen (I know you didn't steal it but it might have been previously stolen) you can activate it just fine.
