Ford never put the 5.0 in the Ranger simply because in 98-01 they could not pass America's stringent weight to safety ratio the 5.0 would have put the ranger in a new class and the safety features would have needed re design
Was just re-reading your post, "Weight to Safety Ratio"... think on that in today's standards, it would be a baby step compared to 700 HP and up vehicle that are out there now !
As I always say, "If I meet the '03 emissions standard of the OEM Ranger it should be good to go" !
