Easier solution - small piece of 60-90 degree bent metal held in front of the heater, mounted to the shelf bracket you're using that would shield the vehicle, would barely, if at all, affect the room heating.

Imagine the heater was a light source, make the metal you mount in front cast a shadow on the hood, if that makes sense?
