When I put new front shocks in my wife's Explorer Sport which has the same front suspension I opened the hood & used a long extension & my air gun, worked great. Yeah, if i'm taking the front up, i use the center cross member, those tabs sit nicely on jack stands if it's up there any longer. So, i'm not sure how to tell if the joint is trashed yet, but the rubber boot sure is, no idea what's involved with that change out though. I did consider trying to get the wizzy gun down from inside the engine bay, it would help "shock" the nut on further, but the issue isn't turn it, the issue is holding the shock dust cover to stop it all rotating :(
