Totally agree. My work truck feels like such a pig. Parking is a pain. I love rangers for their compact size an maneuverability.  Glad you've hung on to your Mazda

My kids who will be driving soon wouldn't let me sell it, even if I wanted to.

So funny story, I probably won't be taking it back to that shop. I got it back yesterday, and the shop told me that after the head gasket job that the engine was basically done for, and it was running like  , cats were clogged, I drove it home and felt like something was really off, and it was running terrible, like it was running on half... the... engine.... I checked the spark plugs, and they had the passenger side done right, but the driver's side didn't have a single one plugged in correctly, so I fixed that and BOOM runs pretty good again. I need some fresh gas, what's in there is a year old and nearly empty.
