My factory 6 disc CD player finally croked. On crutchfield.com it says that a double din fits my truck but modifications are required and afterwards I won' be able to go back to a single din. Has anybody installed a double din? If so, what kind of modifications did you have to make? If a single din is easier I might just go that route. I'm looking at buying a media receiver only. Bluetooth streaming & phone call, sd card, and satellite radio.

Go with the double DIN, you won't regret it, I'm sure. You have to modify the bezel by cutting the top and bottom lip off where the radio slides in. If you ever wanted to go back to a factory radio, you would have to find another bezel.

yup, double dins are simple to fit in the ranger bezel.
that lip on top & bottom (about 1/4" tall) needs to be cut or ground off.
your double din dash kit will mount on the lips on the sides of the opening.

That doesn' seem like nothing major. Dremel tool will take that off no problem. With a double din will I still have to buy the plastic install kit?

A Dremel is the perfect tool for the job. Yes, you will need the plastic install kit as well as the wiring kit. The wiring kit connects to your factory harness and wires into the new head unit, eliminating the need to cut your factory harness.

I knew about the factory wiring harness. I've had to deal with cut harnesses way to many times on some of my older trucks. Kinda irritating when they cut em just to save a buck. Hopefully I can find a dash kit local. If so I'll have one in tonight. I'l probably just pick up a cheaper radio from Wal-Mart for the time being.

Not sure about your local Walmart, but ours has a pretty good selection of decent head units.

I didn't cut up my dash at all. I modified the plastic $9 piece I got off amazon to get it to fit. Here is a video I did of it:
